It looks like the front-right stabilizer arm collapsed.

The reporter takes a few liberties with claiming the crane was overextended.  If the ground under the outrigger gave way, it’s all over too.  That the rig had already placed the far loads makes me think either the outrigger broke or the ground gave way beneath.  That crane may not have had a LMI to tell the operator what the weights were and if it was in danger of over turning, so they would have to go by the charts and work off weights provided by the supplier.  Not a good day for anyone though.

I didn’t see this though. They were dropping stuff off in the back, it could have overextended.

True, if that’s the case, then it could have been a new set of parameters to deal with.  The capacity drops off quite a bit as they extend the out from the center pin.

Oh yeah, I’ m a rigger for shows, we hang things so I’m only familiar with the hanging aspects of angles but I suppose it’s all the same physics. I’ve had to swing a fully extended boom lift out over a lobby from an upper floor to reach a point and it gets bouncy! We set up motors to do the lifting but I had to get the chain up there.    I know if I make a bridle really shallow the stress on the points is exponentially increased so I can imagine that all the way out decreases the weight it can carry by quite a bit.

Well, when business is slow, you’ve got to get creative.
