Here it is, 2021 Optima K5 GT
K5
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Or if you prefer the version with the Catfish face there’s the Sonata N-Line with the same mechanicals
Yes yes, Dying segment but I’m willing to bet this will give the Accord 2.0T a run for the money. I am gonna test drive either one when they become available.

It's a Korean world, and we're all just living in it.

That’s gunna be a “ meh” from me dawg.
Still much better than the catfish garbage of the Sonata.

Sign me up for the Kimchi alone

How heavy is it? Slightly sub-6 second 60mph run seems underwhelming for something with so much power and a “superior” DCT.

That c hrome str ip for the “Floating Roof” gives this the worst looking proportions
Also knockoff BMW 262 wheels

I thought that was a new subie looking at the thumbnail...

Don’t really like the name change but it looks nice if a bit busy , better than the Sonata certainly.

Pretty chubby.

I think this is the same 2.5L turbo that will be in the 2021 Sedona refresh . It also has an 8 speed transmission, but I don’t think it will be the DCT, though.
Exciting times to be a dad.

Specs are not out yet and I have a hunch that 0-60 is being underrated. I will wait for the tests from the major publications to confirm
In any case I am more interested in strong midran ge passing power which shouldn’t be a problem with that engine.
Here’s a video of a Sonata N-line prototype drive that should give some idea

Bulgogi or GTFAC

Yeah they’re putting that in everything now. There’s the Hyundai Santa Fe refresh coming this week and it’s supposed to have the same as well

Pretty swoopy looking. I think it looks nice. Sonata N-Line has better lines. The Koreans are making some compelling vehicles lately.

Koreans? copying the Germans?!1 Unheard of! Unsubstantiated rumors at best!

They’re not copying the Germans until they reunite the peninsula.

It’s possible that it’s being underrated, but it’d bet that it doesn’t have the immediate low end torque or the gearing to get off the line quickly. Or it might be a bit heavier than the average midsized sedan of 10-15 years ago.
Maybe I’m being a bit too nit-picky , but it seems that that a modern 2.5L turbo with a DCT should outrun a 2.5L turbo with a manual from 15 years ago. (An ‘05 Legacy GT has a 0-60 time of 5.3 with only 250hp.)

Kia jumps on the alphanumeric bandwagon just as Lincoln and Cadillac are abandoning it, did their marketing guy also first learn about the Macarena in 1998?

Well we’ll know when the tests come in, However we don’t
have to worry about low end or mid range because
311 lb.-ft @
1,650 - 4,000 rpm
Source: https://www.kiamedia.com/us/en/presskits/2021-k5-unveil-press-kit
BTW the Accord 2.0T and Camry were tested in the 5.7/5.8 range for reference. The inevitable comparison tests will confirm the performance and also the difference between this and the Sonata N-Line

Perhaps, it also probably doesn’t have a launch control feature which really helps AWD DCT cars off the line. My old S3 had 292hp and would clock 60 in about 4.5s.

Honest to god I thought this was a BMW when I first saw the post.

That ’s the maximum torque output at that range, it doesn’t really describe how the engine reacts to the input of accelerating, or how much torque is actually delivered when you mash the throttle.
I’d bet that most sedans (especially not the top tier performance trim) are tuned to react a bit “softer” than sports cars, and considering the additional weight and often shared transmissions, they’re not usually built to handle the forces involved in hard launch.
Overall, I’m just expecting a softer vehicle than the 292hp and 311 ft-lb figures could suggest.

Always one of my favorite days when the embargo is lifted on a car I’ve been working on for almost 6 months.
I drove this thing back in the first week of March. Well, the non-GT version with the smaller turbo motor, but still.

Hmm...I can see it now. K5 GT vs Sonata N-Line vs Camry TRD vs Accord Sport 2.0T. That would be one heck of a showdown.

doesn’t really count as “copying” when you poach all the designers from the german brands
![]() 06/30/2020 at 17:38 |

I t’s not copying the Germans if your designers are all Germans

Based on presentation and spec sheet, best-in-class IMHO. Even VW’s Arteon falls before this.
