Who buys $8 worth of racing fuel? That's like, a light afternoons snack worth.

Someone with a hot-rodded lawnmower?
![]() 06/24/2020 at 17:47 |

Wait, $8 a gallon?
![]() 06/24/2020 at 17:49 |

yes
![]() 06/24/2020 at 17:49 |

Shit that’s expensive. That’s about the same as I pay for it over here, and I pay about 3 x what you do for regular gas.

I wish I owned something that required that kind of gas but at the same time I’m kind of glad I don’t. Eight dollars a gallon?

tbh....i tried the stuff
lotta flavour.... pretty fucking tangy
didnt make me cycle faster at all
ill stick to euro 95

Price per gallon. We have a pump at Sears Point(Sonoma) , Sunoco. Not cheap.

I buy 100 octane avgas from my local aerodrome; currently $5.40/gal

100LL is cheaper, surprisingly.

Hm, I guess it’s worth it for convenience

Ouch. That will make a dent in your bank account.

Well you better be actually racing, it burns fast. I wish I could sneak into the local small airport and put av gas in my carbed vehicles!

Just like racing a car!
![]() 06/24/2020 at 18:03 |

the price is more akin to what the rest of the world (non-US) is paying for fuel in general
![]() 06/24/2020 at 18:10 |

We don’t get racing fuel in pumps. The only way to get it is to b uy it in barrels. The price for 102 RON in 60 liter barrels is $ 22.1 per gallon ( which is around 3.5 times then the regular pump gasoline costs here) . It doesn’t even have the fuel tax included so it wouldn’t even be street legal.

It’s pretty rare here, the racetrack happens to have a station. There are a few around CA if you check the Sunoco website but I have never used it. There are fuel companies with cans/barrels as well.

A good decade back along the local cruise there was a station that sold 110 out of the pump. 11.99 a gallon I think? Seems like a lot, but really, if you have a car that’s built to run on freggin 110 octane, it isn’t at all.

Does it have ethanol and/or lead?

Damn, I thought the 4.50 a gallon it is here was steep

This is one reason my dad dropped the compression in his car from 13.5:1 to 10.5:1. Couldn’t afford the fuel.

We used to have a good alternative. There is also gasoline type call “small engine gasoline” that is sold for l aw n mowers etc. It is produces better smelling exhaust fumes but is more expensive than regular gasoline. It’s not a good racing fuel but you could blend it with the best pump gasoline type using 50/50 mixture. This produced cheap and very good racing fuel.
But this trick doesn’t work anymore. E thanol i s now been added to all gasoline types (5% at minimum). Ethanol itself wouldn’t be a bad additive but t he whole gasoline blend was altered heavily. N ow the mixture trick doesn’t anymore produce such good results.

In my experience mpg improves dramatically. I ran 110 for years in a built CJ7 and several 4 stroke dirtbikes. The engines ran cooler also.
![]() 06/24/2020 at 19:15 |

I just mean your money burns quick and if someone were to buy this stuff it should be for a purpose. Of course a higher octane would get better MPGs mathematically , denser energy results in you using less of it to move the same distance . Generally more energy costs more and they have clearly figured out people caught on to the alternatives being used.

Avgas is only about 93 AKI
![]() 06/24/2020 at 19:36 |

Avgas is only about 93 octane if you measure octane using the same method car gas is measured in the US (AKI)

Once you gotten to the point of fully built, high-compression race motors that can’t run on pump gas, you’re talking engines with run time between rebuilds measure in the not more than dozens of h ours and rebuild costs measured in the tens of thousands of dollars. $8/gallon race fuel is well within the range de minimi s once you’re playing racecar at that level.
![]() 06/24/2020 at 20:10 |

I don’t think that’s correct. My understanding is that 100LL has a MON of 100, and typically a RON of 110. That gives you an AKI of 105, not 93.
If it were 93, that would simplify the elimination of 100LL.
![]() 06/24/2020 at 20:48 |

That’s actually not that bad compared to MR12, although it won’t give you as much power. Not sure if it will give the same smell or eat your fuel system from the inside if left in there too long though.

I p used to get pit passes at the Indy 500 time trials back in high school in the 90s. Saw the pumps in the garages which showed $25/gallon for Methanol. They had to average 1.8mpg to finish the 500 miles.
![]() 06/24/2020 at 21:24 |

That’s the per gallon price.

This is the only place I kmow that has it at the pump. I think there is one other place down by Firebird raceway. This area is filled with exotic car dealerships and tuning companies.

This is for the TT500 I picked up. These engines were built for 93 octane amd will usually knock using 91 , and this one is bored out and running quite a bit more compression over stock.

Fortunately I only have to feed one 540cc cylinder with it. My thirsty V8s run great on 87.

Fortunately there’s not much to the fuel system this is going in. Pretty sure it is ethanol free so if anything it’ll be less corrosive.

I’m guessing neither.

It’s a bit of a simplification as I was assuming no fueling changes are made to your engine to account for the lower specific gravity of Avgas. If you made no changes other than putting Avgas in your car it will run leaner and knock sooner t han the equivalent 100 MON rated automotive/racing fuel. Also the 100 MON rating of Avgas is a bit of an approximation as the test conditions for MON and the test conditions for Avgas are a bit different there isn’t a direct correlation.
![]() 06/25/2020 at 10:18 |

1 00LL has a R ON of 100 (99.5 minimum) , and a M ON of 96 so the average results in an AKI of 98 .
![]() 06/25/2020 at 14:33 |
|
That is only a best guess because Avgas octane is measured in different operating conditions than car fuel. But more importantly Avgas has a lower specific gravity so if you don’t tune/jet specifically for it, you will be running too lean, leading to knock at about the same point you would with running 93 AKI car or racing fuel . If you tuned for Avgas to achieve the same air/fuel ratio you had with car or racing gas, then you would be correct, otherwise you are not going see any better performance in regard to knock prevention than AKI 93 car fuel.
