I was watching Doug’s Stinger video and he mentioned how he only buys cars in the press colour or “hero colour”. What does Oppo think of this? I try to as well, but it doesn’t always work out.
Ford advertised the ST in 2014 in the Molten Orange colour. I saw mine in a dealership after watching so much advertising on it and fell in love.
We also really, REALLY loved the Soul Red on the CX-3, so getting that was a no brainier . Advertised by Mazda from the get go in 2016 .
The VW and Kia? eh, not so much. Those were more... “practical ” purchases.
What say you Oppo?

I’m calling foul because you mentioned a video and did not include a link. Now I have to go and search it out.

more cars should come in cool colors

1. I liked MO until I saw Kona Blue and was immediately sold on it.
2. I didn’t want another white car, and Great Falls Green is better on the GTI.
3. Nassau Blue was never actually available on the Z06, despite being debuted in it.

I thought all the Stinger press photos were blue.

I love the hero color.
Some people want a car to be a canvas that expresses their individuality . I reckon that’s bullshit, and a weak justification for changing the car’s wheels every 6 months and cutting holes in the bumper.
I just want the car to be the car, as is, as intended by the manufacturer. And that’s part of the reason I’m into hero colors.
That said, I didn’t know the Stinger had red as its hero color, and I much prefer the yellow. So I guess there are exceptions. I’m not sure I’d buy
a
red Ferrari, I might for some models.
But also Doug is into the yellow Carrera GT, but the hero color for that car is definitely silver. Exceptions, exceptions.
I can’t think of many hero colors just now, but certainly Hothouse Green is the only color for a VY SS.

The good paint colors these days are really good, which is why I find it mildly infuriating that few people pick them. As much as I love classic cars, I have to admit that modern cars have them beat when it comes to paint. I’ve often found myself staring at newer cars I would otherwise ignore simply because I admire the paint. I 100% agree with you.

That Soul Red is fantastic. I really wanted something other than silver, but the only WRX left was silver, so I bought it. I really want a nice red, maybe blue or green for my next vehicle. I really liked having a green truck.

I got my FiST in performance blue because I didn’t like orange at the time (the molten orange seats I still find hideous) and I found the green and grayscale colors to be lacking. My previous car was red so I wanted to switch it up.
My FoST is yellow because it was a new color for that year and I guess it was the “hero color” for 2017. Hot pepper red is nice though and it came out on the FoST just one year later. But my GF got her Fiesta in that color so I get to see it anyways!

Manufacturers tend to advertise their cars in a striking color and I love striking colors. Sometimes that anticipation looking at the press photos in that stunning color make it better and sometimes I don't care.

Agreed, Crosstrek’s color palette is a prime example

I don’t think either of my cars were advertised much, they might not have a hero shade.

I know I’ve seen several Hondas in absolutely stunning shades of blue and red, and when Chevy unveiled the controversial new Blazer, I mostly found myself staring in awe at the orange paint...

Teh Chevy Spark actually has some good color choices, including orange, Caribbean Blue, and even pink!
The Sonic is available in Oasis Blue, which is also a really cool color

I’ve only bought used and paint color has been down the list of priorities. I guess the abarth is the the main color as it is black which was advertised pretty heavily. Although we had to add the red stripes and side view mirror caps.
Im not sure the scorpion/monte has a color that fits. There was at least one press car painted yellow which featured in the first test drive article but yellow was never an option to buy.
Not sure it was an official lancia effort but in 1975 2 montes and an HPE recreated all 3000km of the Carrera Panamericana. They advertised it pretty heavily and there are even diecasts of the cars made. Maybe that counts?
Fieros were pretty limited in paint colors but bright blue and yellow were available for one year each at the end.

I love my seats! But I can see how they wouldn't be for everyone

I take it a step further and usually apply it to the whole brand.
For instance:
Subarus/Fords are Blue
Mazdas/Ferraris/Alfas are Red
VWs in white
Audis in Black
Mercs/Asto ns in Silver.
People may disagree, it’s just how my brain is wired :)

For me, a little Doug goes a long way.

I think the “hero color” is usually the best color on “hero cars”. However, this only applies to hero cars, but not brands ; for example, most Ferraris look best in “ not red” but if you buy a black Mustang Bullit t you’ve made a terrible mistake.

I’ve never heard it called that before, but I suppose it makes sense that a manufacturer would got to pains to choose whatever they feel is the most flattering color for press photos.
Chrysler took things to extremes in the ‘90s, adopting a distinct color for each brand - Plymouth was purple, Dodge red, Eagle emerald green, and Chrysler was either silver or gold.
I’ve heard it rumored that Japanese companies used to use white exclusively for scale models, concept drawings, clay mockups, and prototypes, because it’s considered an auspicious color and does a good job of highlighting subtle creases and shadow lines, so that therefore older Japanese cars look most natural in white. Not sure if it’s true, it could be purely coincidental.

I briefly considered white but couldn’t bring myself to buy the WRX is anything other than World Rally Blue. It’s the iconic colour for Subarus involved in rally and I wanted one since watching them in WRC as a kid in the late 90’s.

My Regal GS is in the hero color. I live in south Florida and had to go to Ohio to get it. Very few 2018's left over when I bought it.
Worth it.

My veloster N is the light blue they always show. I don't care if it's too "common" for this car. I love it, and get a lot of approving comments on it too.

I am guilty - my wife’s Crosstrek is in that light sky “Hyper blue” color they used in all the advertisements. And honestly I still love the color. The Focus ST is gorgeous in the Tangerine Scream release color.

He said that he fell in love with the Carrera GT was when he first saw a yellow one, and that seems to be why.

I think that’s the reason as well. Funny how someone who’s so aware of the car world could be swayed by such an innocent reason :P
