It’s okay, I guess.

Of course it’s gonna win Indy two dozen times when almost the entire field is using it. That’s like saying “Pirelli makes the best tires because every F1 champion for the last nine  years drove on them"

You mean the Peugeot L3 upon which the Offenhauser was based? :)

Can you really blame the readership? Last few weeks have  an onslaught of socio articles loosely tied to vehicles that created the most toxic comment sections I’ve ever seen o n Jalopnik.

I really don't think anything specifically designed for racing should be in the running in the first place. I mean really of course they're usually going to be amazing (hopefully) and relatively unrestrained. But production engines have alot more parameters they have to live within which makes it that much more interesting when they are either beautiful/ingenious/etc. But that's just me.

As of yesterday, nobody had mentioned the Ford Kent either. Derivatives including the Lotus Twin Cam and Cosworth BDx ha ve been i n production for 60 years and for the first 20 years of that they were one of the most ubiquitous engines in Europe . T hey’ve powered everything from the most basic Anglia to the RS fucki ng 200, not to mention Hart and Zakspeed F1 cars, launched Cosworth as an industry force, and dominated international rallying, F2 and F3 for a decade . Plus pretty mu c h ever y successful open-wheeler driver in the past 50 years has spent so me time with one behind their ear in a Form ula Ford. There’s an argument that they’ve had more influence on European motorsport than any other engine.

Not to mention, has anyone actually listened to a BDA in full cry ? It’s the song of our fricking people, people .

There's a huge difference though. The Offy was never a spec engine. The Indy 500 back then was the pinnacle of run what ya brung. The Offy won two dozen times, because it was the best two dozen times in a race where you could practically run any damn thing you wanted.

I agree. They whiffed this slow pitch softball. It powered whole fields at Indy cause nothing else was even close to competitive.

Thirty-five Indy constructors ran it. Thirty-fiv e. It might as well have been a spec engine.

Indeed but it was literally based on it :

The Offenhauser Design Inspiration

“The road to the creation of the Offenhauser engine started literally at the earliest days of automotive development when three French drivers/engineers convinced Peugeot to build a twin-cam engine of their design,” adds Justice.

All three engineers, Paolo Zuccarelli, Jules Goux and Georges Boillot were 27 years old when they presented the idea to Peugeot. Goux is better known as the 1913 Indy 500 winner. Their design featured two overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, a departure from the typical racing engines of the day that relied on bigger displacement for power.

The 1922 Miller 220 inspired by the Peugeot twin cam Grand Prix engine.

“During World War 1, parts for a Peugeot engine could not be acquired from France for the 1914 season. The engine was taken to Harry Miller’s shop for service and was cared for by Miller’s machine shop supervisor, Fred Offenhauser,” says Justice. “Miller and Offenhauser saw many benefits in the Peugeot design which later served as the basis of the Miller racing engine. The Miller engine later evolved into the famed Offenhauser engine which owes much inspiration from the early Peugeot Grand Prix racing engines.”

But it wasn't. It was just the best for a very long time. Tons of other engines went against it, and failed.

they made a lot of power but if you follow Indy and watch races from this era the overwhelming reason for dropping out, “burned piston”. towards the end they were holding together better but I think 81 was the last time one made the field at Indy

Well, that’s the point of these open-ended question posts: you add the answer that you want to see.

(To be fair, I still get frustrated when no one mentions the Porsche Cayenne on WCSYB. It’s always the real answer!)

As an open wheel fan...

All the yes. An engine that has its basis in the 19...teens. Pretty sure it started as Peugeot design that Henry Miller then re-engineered his own way... and Offenhauser after him. Incredibly long lived design from a by-gone era where a single man could practically create functional art.

Also, can’t have a blown headgasket when the head is machined one piece with the cylinder block! Probably came in handy at the dawn of the turbo era in the 60s and into the early 70s before they started putting caps on max allowed boost.

Its a pretty amazing engine considering it was designed in the 1930's for a couple hundred h p and the same basic engine turbocharged was up to 1000 hp in the ‘7o’s. It’s last indy race was 1982. That’s a great engine!

And Pretty Too!
