In a previous reply on a FOlding thread, I said my current Win 10 boxen is old and full of cat fur. It’s a half-height I7-3770 8g/Geforce 710. Worked for SWTOR a couple years ago and that was enough. Trying to run F@H made the fan run max all the time and blow hot air on my legs.
Then I misread the specs and bought Red Dead Redemption 2. It doesn’t play better than ~10 fps. So time to upgrade. I’m trying to get something within the RDR2 spec (bottom of page).

and something that can Fold. My other loads are negligible - journal, some c coding/compiling , the occasional movie, surfing and the like.
So I’ve looked at newegg, micro center, and such for something to fit. Boy, howdy, things have changed in the last 5-years! I’m confused(!) and in a bit of a hurry. I’m also trying to get my home back in the water (saltwater == everything’s expensive) so the budget here is about a grand. I’m thinking of this PC and get a 1080 card in a couple months:

At least it’s a full-size case. It fits under the nav station and away from my knees. Propritary power supply but I have room to mount an external one under there, too, if needs be. Or, this one which is another half-height that is within the specs. But I can’t figure out if xx80s come in half height.

(Arrrg! Why does kinja go get that mess instead of letting me just write an href tag?) So I toss this to you guys since some of you know what is going on. I know you know more resources and I enjoy the discussion. As my old friend John (RIP) used to say, “Can ya hep me?”, please.

XX80s will definitely not come in half height. The best you could do there would be a 1650. Same deal on the AMD front.
I don’t really feel like that Dell is a good value to be honest. Of course I’m all about building from scratch, but I think you could do better either way. Also the specs don’t list power supply wattage, so you’ll want to find that out, otherwise you might have be replacing the PS in order to use a high end graphics card.

Don’t go overboard on the processor - a GPU will fold way better than a CPU, and most games are GPU limited unless you have the lowest spec processor and a high spec graphics card. I’d get this - https://www.newegg.com/acer-n50-600-ur1i-nitro-50/p/N82E16883101790?Item=N82E16883101790
Great balance all around for now, or if you decide to upgrade later you have some options. Prebuilt and ready to go, unless you want to do some work yourself in which case,I have other recommendations.
A close second is this Ryzen powered PC that trades a bit of GPU for a better CPU, IMO - https://www.newegg.com/abs-computer-technologies-ala194/p/N82E16883102945?Item=N82E16883102945&quicklink=true

I’m partial to https://www.ibuypower.com for gaming computers buy you may be overwhelmed with options, even at the $1k price point

A newer CPU won’t make much of a difference for gaming (changed my i7 2600k for a Ryzn 7 1700x about 2 years ago and it didn’t make a sensible difference ) , a graphic card will.
Buy a decent graphic card (and a case, a PSU a nd a SSD if needed), some used RAM to have 16Gb then you can wait a little bit to change the rest of the setup.
Don’t bother with those Dell that cost more and are more annoying to modify (PSU with limited peak power and connectors for example).

Thank you. Dang but ok. I used to build my own but not anymore. Too old for bleeding edge stuff - I’ve bled enough. :)

Heh, well the good news is that they really have gotten better at rounding metal edges in cases, so if you did attempt it you’d be less likely to come away bloody.

Thank you. So an I5-9th gen is still plenty fast enough. I see I9s out. Good to know. This is starting to jell in my head. And I like that your suggestion is changeable like the Dell isn’t. I do want a prebuilt with options for later. Like, add an 8Gb stick to this now and still be under budget. I test s/w in a VM sometimes and the extra RAM helps.

There’s a limited supply right now due to COVID. Honestly, I’d expect supplies and prices to normalize over the co ming 6-12 months for parts and whatnot. I thought briefly about getting something with a bit more oomph, but sine I have something just fine, I don’t think there’s a good value proposition to the upgrade until things return to something closer to status quo.

If you did want to build again here is a great place to start.

Wow! Had no idea there are so many options for each part of a build. This site was quite the adventure. Thank you.

For folding the CPU isn’t going to make much difference. The i9 could be much faster than the i5, but a good GPU would still outpace them by roughly an order of magnitude. But yeah for most general purposes 8th gen and higher Intel GPUs should be pretty decent. Right now the Ryzen 3XXX is probably better performance per dollar than any Intel chip.
