I’m ready to take a trip somewhere. Anywhere.
A Swissair DC-3 and Convair 440 at Zurich-Kloten airport ca. 1958.

Amen to that! I’m daydreaming of lying in the grass alongside runway 18/36 at KOSH, watching the afternoon air show and the warm sun on my back...

We were supposed to leave for Disneyland on Saturday. And yesterday, I came across an old post here on our last big road trip from TX to VA, 3,000+ miles. I just want to get behind the wheel and drive . I want to go somewhere. We’ve been sitting around for three months now. I’m starting to get a little stir crazy.

I had to make a trip into town this morning. The weather made it interesting . Perhaps a quick drive in the country would do you some good.

My oldest is finally working in earnest on getting his license. We have to fill out a driving log for the state, so that means an hour of driving around town. It’s actually kind of nice. He’s doing a good job, and I can relax and play some tunes while we go exploring. Still, I’m up for a 300-mile day in the saddle.

Yep. I hear you. Haven’t even taken a day off this year, let alone gone somewhere. It’s getting REAL old.

And I was just reading in the WaPo that hospitalizations are starting to spike two weeks after Memorial Day. Maybe we get the second wave over before the fall?

Ugh. We need a summer we can enjoy. I hope it doesn’t blow up again - for everyone’s sake.

Good Morning! I’m right there with you on the trip - the Mrs and I were talking about taking a road trip out west in July maybe. We’re waiting on seeing how things look for the next few weeks before we start any planning.

Unfortunately, the early returns aren’t promising .

My son is in the same boat. We have to log 80 hours of driving. He has somewhere around 20. We plan to go to south Texas in July, so he’ll have an opportunity to get 10 hours of driving each way. We’re hoping he can get another 15-20 hours of driving in while he’s there. Then we’ll just have to log another 20 before school starts in August so he can drive himself.

Definitely not which is why other than a wistful conversation about it we haven’t made any plans...
The thought is we’d like to take a week and half off and drive west on 70 to Denver, hit the mountains for a day or so, jump up through Wyoming, down through Utah to California the home through the southern 40.
It’s all pretty wishful thinking right now though.

The TX form only allows you to log one hour/day. We’re certainly doing more than that, but we can’t clobber the sheet in two or three long drives. But the next section is highway driving, so we might spend a couple of hours on a road trip, even if we can only log one.

I guess I’m thankful that we don’t have that level of restriction. How many hours are required?
My daughter was getting her license around the time my mom passed, so she had several opportunities to make the 12+ hour drive from our house to my mom’s. On the last trip back, we were in a small caravan with me driving a U-Haul while pulling my car on a trailer and my wife driving our Explorer pulling a small trailer loaded with the mower and other outdoor gear. When my wife finally got tired, my daughter took over - at night, in the rain.
There aren’t many teenagers who can say that they’ve had that experience.

30 hours, graduated, starting with just sitting in the driveway to driving on the interstate. It’s actually a pretty good list, but it starts out VERY slowly. You can see it here .

That prompted me to look for an official form in Louisiana. My wife has been helping each of the kids to take care of their logs. Turns out there’s not an official log form, but I did find out that my son only needs 50 hours, not 80! That’s going to make this so much easier. He needs 15 hours of nighttime driving, but there are no other restrictions about time or place. Over here, the kids have to take driver’s ed. before getting their permit. My son completed that last summer, but he’s been lazy about driving.

Same here. It’s been almost two years since my son finished drivers ed. He had a minor incident early on (nobody hurt, nothing bent) and he got spooked. He’s much more confident now with another year under his belt. He will have to take the written test again, since that certificate expired. He can do his OTR test either with a DPS person or at the driving school. Haven’t decided on that route. I did mine with a VA State Trooper.

Our kids don’t have to take a driving test after they’ve completed driving school. They just take their log into the DMV and walk out with a new license.
