Felix Wankel standing next to the Porsche 914.
Porsche 914 Wankel by Sbarro (c1971)
commissioned by Swiss industrialist Dr. A. Gerber, they used the twin rotor engine and semi auto trans from an NSU Ro80 with a radiator installed in the nose using fans from a Renault R16.

I’d thought about swapping the rotormotor from my RX-7 into my 914, at one point, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to finish it in the two months of summer break in college. Apparently it’s a thing that a few people did, back when no one gave a shit about 914s.

Lighhtweight high reving rotary in such a lightweight car would be a hoot. Semi auto not so much

I bet it’s better... even with a short-shifter, those manual gearboxes are sloppy as a 50s Beetle.

I thought the short shifters made it even worse?

Entirely possible! I never drove mine enough after I’d installed it to know.
