Mobile motorcycle m echanic (try saying that ten times fast) adjusted the carbs and drained some fue l that had... Uh... Gotten into the wrong place? Idk. I was fifty miles away and just happy I’d found a way to get the thing worked on without having to drive to Seattle.
The good news is that it idled much better.
The bad news is that I still had the issue where it would die if I let the revs drop, and thus had to keep the throttle engaged at stop lights. And of course, sometimes it would still die, because I’d give it throttle and get literally nothing despite being in second gear.
Any chance this could be transmission related..? Damn thing only has 3000 miles.
Anyhoo... After it dying on the way to work this morning and taking a good twenty minutes to start back up and limp the rest of the way, I decided to leave it and take a work van home.
Sigh.
It’s going up on Craigslist, as I don’t reaaaaaally have the time to tinker right now. Also, I learned my lesson throwing money at my Volvos. CUT LOSSES AND RUN. (at least until there’s a garage in my life for projects....)
On a positive note, first day settling into the new job responsibilities went great!

Noooo! Not the flame scooter! I will only accept this if the overall level of scooting increases.
Is that work van the dodgy old Dodge that should be relegated to storage duty?

Yes lol. But the engine is rock solid and the brakes have been gone over with a fine tooth comb!
I know. It hurts me a bit, but it's been over two years straight of unreliable or incredibly compromised vehicles, and I just need something that I can turn the key and go without drama. Whether that will be a used Prius/Honda Fit/etc., new Ninja 400, or work van/Lyft is still yet to be determined.

Thats reassuring that it has had some heavy maintenance before you go off bringing your work she d home.
I get it. Sometimes you just need transportation. I heard CoFL has some screaming hot deals on a Forte with no air conditioning haha. If you are looking for the cheapest thing that won’t give you much trouble but many MPGs, the 1.8 5 speed Cruze doesn’t fall victim to the fragile auto or the unreliable 1.4 and is a very overlooked vehicle. I’ve seen them as low as $ 4k in that combo in good shape . It would leave room in the budget over a Prius for scooter shenanigans.

My old nighthawk had some idling and stalling issues and it turns out the rectifier was so weak, the battery only got charged when the engine was above 3500rpm. Bad en ough when the battery was charged, but it meant in low speeds, the battery would siphon off all the charge it could muster and sometimes the bike just died. And would struggle to restart, if it did. So if you didn’t immediately ride hard, the battery would die completely and you’d be unable to keep it running.
Also, this sounds like the issue my Audi had, where the Idle Air Control valve (IAC valve) failed. Might be something in how air gets to the engine?

Could be a mixture/idle screw adjustment issue? This video seems to have the way to adjust it if you still feel like playing with it.

How much shipped to Chicago? ;)
I totally understand the desire to get something reliable. That's why I love my truck so much. I can always depend on it to get me to work. Why not get that reliable thing, and just keep the scooter to play with?

I have the same scooter [only not as dramatic].
Check the plug and check the plug wire itself. I had a similar problem, inspected the plug wire and found two cracks in the insulation. This leads to arching especially in damp conditions.
Replacement is crazy simple if the Ignition Coil is a Bosch. The wire literally unscrews from the plug contact and the coil the connector being like a sheetmetal screw that drives right into the core of the wire.

Small engine EFI. You can find knock off kits much cheaper if you search. There’s even a tiny turbo kit if you are feeling real dangerous. I know you said you didn’t have time right now, but maybe in the future. Make it live up to the paint job.

I’d pull the jets and soak them in Sea Foam, then blow them out with a compressor. 9 times out of ten idle issues like that are dirty carbs. Also check to make sure your floats are set correctly.

When was the last time the valves were adjusted? How much? I live in the TriCities and own a pickup.

So, any chance you could sneak it onto an eastbound Fedex? If so how much?
Interesting scooters are few and far between in my area, and I want to see the flame scooter live on.

The issue does not sound major to me....it RUNS and functions, so it can’t be a major transmission or engine problem....it just dies unless you’re revving it.
This still smacks of a fueling or ignition
issue to me. I know you don’t have time to tinker, but I think a new carb or a carb rebuild would solve it? It would never be just gunk/dirt in the lines? Had it sat for awhile before you bought it? Did the mechanic clean the carb out?

Oh, right!!! Good call! Definitely check the coil!!! I’d love to see this be an easy fix before you sell it as I love that thing and you enjoy riding it and they are dead simple so your problem can’t be THAT hard to sort! :)

It's only one cylinder, it should be pretty easy to diagnose. Sounds like it's a fuel issue or a spark issue. The fuel line is about 12 inches long and the plug is right there.

Welcome to being an adult.
Having a scooter or a motorcycle as your primary transportation is a questionable choice, even when it’s running right. There’s always weather to deal with. And danger. And girls don’t see it as a good sign for a long-term stable relationship. The good folks of Oppo see it as a lot of fun, but we like to encourage fun decisions so we can live vicariously through others.

LS swap.

Maybe some minor thing got knocked or worked its way loose with all your stunting? I agree it sounds very minor!

LS swap? Are you nuts? This thing deserves a Cummins 12 Valve! Think of the advantage of all that torque on the Seattle hills.

So it’s idling fine but might die if you cut the throttle and the revs drop quickly? Reminds me of my old cb500, the carbs had a bypass channel that was built specifically to get fuel to the engine in that situation (high rpm and manifold vacuum, zero throttle). In my case it was vacuum regulated, there was a little rubber plunger that opened that channel at high vacuum. I wonder if something similar is going on here... Maybe there’s some crap lodged in that channel of your carb, and the mechanic didn’t fix it because he just adjusted the pilot screws. Good luck!
