Probably to be taken with several grains of salt since I’ve never heard of the source, but if this is true it would be very interesting. It seems like a much riskier move than moving the 6 to RWD since the CX-5 is Mazda’s bread and butter, at least in the US...but it would make for a mighty attractive SUV. The CX-9 is probably going to RWD as well, needless to say.
Also of note is that the inline 6 is mentioned to be a 3-liter with 281hp.

Mazda might just make a better BMW that BMW if they went RWD and I6 for most of their models.

All these RWD inline 6 set ups.

I feel like Mazda is the first automaker to realize no one has a front middle seat anyways...so a long skinny engine like an I6 can extend further into the cabin space and not cause packaging issues.

Right? I’m going to feel obligated to buy a Mazda at this point , they’re just trying so hard . Only thing that would be better would be a manual + wagon, but alas

You could always move to Europe and get a manual 6 wagon, which would be absolutely delicious and may see some importations in. . . 25 years. . . rats.

If they can give me one with RWD and a stick they might make a Mazda man out of me. I already think they’re some of the consistently best looking new cars, and I’m very down with their whole driver engagement focus, how the car provides feedback to the driver and how the car is a horse and all that jazz

Sadly I wouldn’t hold out for a manual. I’m just hoping they finally upgrade their auto option to an 8 speed, that’s long overdue.

Indeed. RWD, I6, Japanese reliability and (IMO) better-than-Alfa styling, why on earth would you buy a new BMW over something like that?

Dear Mazda,
Straight six RWD Mazda 3.
Thank you,

Having driven many miles with their 6 speed, while also spending plenty of time in cars with 8, 9, and CVT transmissions, I think the Mazda transmission is still top notch. I've never felt the need for more gears and have done close to 40mpg on a long trip with a N/A Mazda6.

Disgruntled BMW engineers all going to Mazda... I guess? *shrugs*

3 liter supercharged straight six, and a 3.3 turbodiesel straight six?! Hot damn.

I’m not sure RWD is an advantage in their bread and butter crossover. FWD likely easier to drive and more predictable in weather for most people who drive these things.

Will this fit in the new Miata?

Center consoles are MASSIVE nowadays. Even bigger now than when most cars actually had transmissions in there.

Will you buy it new?

If it was priced around the same as the current Mazda 3 and offered with a manual transmission I would seriously consider buying one.

I have a hard time seeing the CX5 doing this. CX9? yeah. CX5? nope.

I expect the price for the top end trims to be in the $50k CDN range for the I6 and rwd if they can get under $50k that would be amazing though
