so I stuck a drill in between my thumb and forefinger. about a 7/16 drill bit, one of those expensive fancy ones that sends ribbons of hot steel flying. It didn’t really even hurt, but boy howdy is it going to tomorrow.
I was drilling out spotwelds on an old quarter panel for an old plymouth. The Doctor asked if I was dealing with rust (he knows what I get up to) so that bought me a tetanus shot. He then asked me to what degree it was dirty (mousey) I said it was in a junkard for 45 years and had a dead bird in it, that bought me a course of antibiotics.
How’d it happen? let’s say a picnic table is not an appropriate place to do metalwork, but that would have been better than the bit of plywood on top of a fender stand I was using (as seen in my last post). I was not using a spotweld cutter, just a cordless drill I know goddamned well better than to have my other hand somewhere I can jam a drill in it. But a little awkward positioning, and not stopping to put
it right sent me to the doctor for some stitches. (he didn’t stitch it in the end due to risk of infection) Being Canada though, I drilled into my hand, went to see my family doctor, got fixed up, a tetanus shot, and a bottle of horse pills and was home within an hour of drilling myself. Mrs doorhandle got me some cheez-its and the kids and I are goin
g to watch some superstore.
Love to my American friends, good things are coming, even if it gets
worse before it gets better, stay united.

Nice that you didn't hit anything more vital like a bone, tendon, or some such thing.

Mrs doorhandle knew I was serious when she asked if I was ok and I said “no, this’ll be a few stiches” usually I just tape the finger back together and keep going.

From what you described, I would do the same if you came in my clinic- wash it out, leave it unstitched , update your tetanus, and give you some antibiotics. I don't know if I could do it as rapidly though.

to be honest, I often would actually use electrical or masking tape because the wait times can be long, today was unusally quick, possibly cause covid is keeping the hypochondriacs from clogging the system like they usually do.

You make a lovely hamberder model.
In the interest of collecting enough undisguised oppo into a JRitS would you mind throwing a wrenching tag on this.

Damn, glad you missed everything vital! FYI it’s best not to drill your hand with stuff! Glad out health care system worked and sent you on the way...bet it’s going to be sore today though :(
Keep us apprised on how it heals!

Obligatory drill-related injury story time. I wouldn’t believe this one if I didn’t personally know the guy who did it.
My friend, let’s call him Doug, because that’s his name, was putting up drywall in his bathroom above the tub. He was standing on the edge of the tub to reach the ceiling because the ladder didn’t really fit. Trying to balance a piece of drywall in one hand, screws / self-balance with the other, he had no way to hold the drill while positioning the drywall, so he stuck it between his legs. Specifically, down his pants like a gangtsa (tm). As he reached up toward the ceiling, the drill slipped down a little and engaged the trigger. In his words, “franks were wrapped around beans, it wasn’t pretty. I had to reverse the drill to undo the... wrapping.”
Almost needless to say, the drywall piece came down on his head and broke. After assessing the damage - mostly pride - and deciding it wasn’t an ER trip, he went out to the couch and sat down, unable to speak. Eventually he told his wife. She brought him a strong drink and left him alone.

I always worry about tools taking a bite out of me, especially now that I’m doing more wood working and most of the tools have sharp blades that spin. I hope you’re wound isn’t too serious and you heal up quickly.
