Burnt rubber, engine noises, dirt and dust kicked up everywhere...racing is back! Weekend 1 of 5 was a grand success, and an awesome way to kick off some public interaction. It’s been a few months since I was able to hang around some great folks. It was well needed, and worth the wait.
This was my first Detroit Region I’ve attended; and it was clear why they are such a successful RallyCross region. From the safe social distancing practices to the specific assignments for all entrants. This weekend ran as smooth as a Rolls Royce engine. The site was new for everyone. Milan Dragway is about 25 minutes south of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Off season talks and rumors were hinting at a mixed surface course here in the future. That’s going to be fun.
We weren’t the only ones on site. The strip was hosting a test n’ tune, and there was motorcross on the other end of the site. No matter where you looked, something was going on. This event maxed its capacity within hours of opening up to the public. 65 entrants in all. Everything from your common collection of Miatas and WRXs to a Yugo and a Chrysler Crossfire making appearances. And, of course, the van was there.

Between the absolute beautiful weather, the constant traffic of trucks and trailers hauling their drag toys and motorcross toys, the sound and smell of drag cars ripping burnouts all day, and the endless assault of cars kicking up dust and gravel, it was a gearhead’s paradise. People with super duty trucks hauling their drag rigs that have tens of thousands of dollars invested in were pulling over to watch us send our budget friendly vehicles around cones.

As for me, I was sloppy all day. I loved the hard gravel surface, but struggled through the soft dirt and grass. I still need to learn left foot braking too. Plenty of room for improvement. But, even with all of my baggage, snagged a third place in Stock Front class out of 5 entrants .
Next weekend is Ohio Valley Region’s first event. Can’t wait to get back out there.
Epilogue
I have been working nights this week, meaning I’ve had too much free time on my hands. With said free time, I decided to come up with an idea. I posted a little while ago inquiring on a graphic designer. The reasoning was for a logo for my very unofficial, half serious race team I am starting. I worked with Taylor Martin whom did a phenomenal job putting my ideas onto paper so accurately. I give you...Greasetank Raci ng!

That's awesome! I'm jealous. I was planning to go to the double header Rallycross on the grounds of Road America this weekend, but the fun police shut me down.

It seems Rallycross is more detrimental to the well being of a car than autocross it. Is that a fair assessment?

From what I’ve seen, yes. A friend of mine runs in rally cross, also in MI, and yeah, he has dedicated rally cross cars. Had an SVT focus and now has a turbo Miata. But they do take a bit of a beating. That being said, most of his repairs are for engine and regular maintenance. But I wouldn’t take my daily driver on rally cross, but wouldn’t think twice about AutoX in my daily. AutoX is a great way to get a feel for you daily driver at the limit. It’s a bit rough on tires though.

So much dirt kicking! It’s funny to see so many battered and bruised little cars alongside your large and suprisingly white van. Bit of variety.
