But the RT Caravan is only 12 years old, Chrysler could easily milk it for another 12.

I’m shocked it’s gone on this long, considering FCA has had a newer (and generally better) minivan for four years now. It seems likely we’ll see the Pa cifica/Voyager wearing Dodge badges (and maybe the Caravan nameplate) as a replacement. Of course at the moment Chrysler doesn’t have much reason to exist at all, which could speed things along, or make them more reluctant to potentially cannibalize half of Chrysler’s lineup .

This is actually 3 months later than originally planned, May was supposed to be the final build date, but they shut down before that due to COVID. They're reopening the line to finish out the last batch of orders. FCA had committed to keeping the Caravan around until it either became unprofitable or until it could no longer comply with regulations, the first criterion has probably been met, especially with the introduction of the new Voyager.

Needs more grille. That’ s the solution for everything these days.

FCA’s plan was to focus Dodge on sport/performance oriented models and for Chrysler to become a “people mover” brand with just crossovers and minivans/MPVs. The Chrysler Voyager is the replacement for the Caravan, since all their brands are sold through a single dealer network, they don’t need to badge engineer a Dodge version anymore.

I wanted them to put a hellcat engine in it. Seems like the answer to all of the problems of the FCA these days. They’re already making a hellcat durango. 700 horsepower in everything!

I mean they haven't even got around to building a Hellcat version yet fergoodnesake

Interesting that the two pioneers of the modern minivan, the Renault Espace and this Dodge, were introduced and cancelled in the same year.

Long voyager should do that.

1. The Pacifica may have more tech than the GC and swoopy lines, but better it is not.
2. They’ve held on to the GC because it still outsells the Pacifica by a large margin.
By doing away with it, I think they are posed to lose a lot of customers. I know we’re already thinking on other brands when my 94 needs replacing.

This is 100% going to bite them in the ass.
The GC still outsells the Pacifica even to date. It does well because it is literally the best bang for your buck minivan on the market right now.

I knew you were going to complain about that one
From what I’ve seen reviews of the Pacifica have been vastly better than the Caravan, though I’ll admit I haven’t been diligently minivan shopping. It’s certainly possible that the Pacifica is just too expensive for some of the people buying Caravans regardless of its other merits. I’d also assume the Caravan is preferred by fleet buyers. I guess if the Pacifica is reall too spendy people looking for a more basic minivan might have to check out the Transit Connect or something.

The GC did acquit itself quite well in this test, but I agree its days were numbered. Keeping the old model going like that has never been a winning proposition in the long run.

They’ve been talking about axing the Caravan for a few years now... but keep delaying it because it still sells well. In spite of being old, it’s still outselling the Pacifica in the USA:

And outselling the Pacific by a huge margin in Canada

I don’t think they should cancel it until they have something to replace it with.

We drove a few Pacificas before we bought our GC.
Our take away was this: It’s a cheap POS hiding behind loads of tech that fools the masses.
If you look
past the tech (
which we do seeings we have no want for it
), the interior is cheap/hard plastic everywhere, the seats are hard and unsupportive, the ride and handling are sloppy, and the transmission is horrid. The GC is quieter inside, smoother riding, has tighter handling, has more comfortable seats, and has better quality inside. Sure the inside may not look “modern”, but that means nothing to me.
As far as the TC, the lack of a more powerful engine keeps us out of them, which sucks because it is by far the best driving minivan on the market right now. That’s actually the biggest complaint across the board is lack of power. Instead of giving consumers what they want, Ford installs an even less powerful engine, and pushes buyers to CUVs instead.
Honestly, a Sedona will likely be our next minivan purchase. It seems to be taking the GC’s spot as the best “bang for your buck” minivan right now.
