Mitsubishi Motors, no. But they’re part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which definitely could have.
But I doubt they would have wanted to. IMO it’s only stubborn pride which keeps them making cars at all. As it is, they’ve already suffered the indignity of having Daimler buy out most of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus.

They were apart of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, now owned by Renault- Nissan . But even then, no not nearly enough money to buy Chrysler in the late 1980’s.

No, around that time Chrysler was pretty much on top of the world, just launched the Abrams Tank, owned AMC, Lamborghini, and a major share of the US marketplace.
