So, that !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I got. Today I got word that the Milwaukee region SCCA, which took over rallycrossing in my area since Stateline Rallycross went bust, will not let me run the F-150.
I’m not sure what I’m going to do now. I really don’t want to kill this thing by Gambling it, as it’s got too much life left in it. I would not feel good about that. But, now they won’t let me rallycross it.
I don’t know, maybe I’ll sell it and buy something smaller that I can rallycross , or put it up for trade and try and get something that way . I received such a cold reception from that group when I said I wanted to rallycross the F-150, that it’s kind of put me off of joining them.
When my friend gave me the truck, he explicitly (and unprompted) gave me permission to flip it, if I felt that was best. But I still feel weird about that too.
Not sure what I’m going to do. Suggestions welcome.

maybe learn a bit about metalworking? patch up those rust spots and clean it up a bit, you can definitely flip it

I think sell it and get something fun is the way to go.

Also a claybar, detail and interior shampoo would help I bet!

Learn? What are you, some kind of nerd?

That’s how my local SCCA group is here - real harsh and standoffish when approached with anything strange. They had a guy show up with a yugo to run it (for fun of course) and they wouldn’t let him because it wasn’t an approved vehicle. Then gave a line about it being because the suspension was setup in a way where one of the wheels could lift during cornering and I added ‘the last 4 vehicles I saw run all had a wheel off the ground during various parts of the course’ they wouldn’t budge so the guy who brought the yugo left and so did I (I was just there to watch and bring something next time).

It’s too rusty at this point to be anything but a rusty work truck. The rockers are completely gone.

Offer it up for trade

If you feel weird about selling it then give your friend half the profits

I’m really disappointed by how no t fun they made this all sound. I asked about bringing a lowered S-10/Ranger, and only got a “maybe.”

I can imagine that something with that lengthy wheelbase would maybe cause problems on a rallycross course, or they might not like the high center of gravity. No doubt that SCCA group will be more . . . constrained . . . than your previous group.
I say try to trade it for something that you would enjoy rallycrossing. Or sell it and use the proceeds accordingly.

That’s a good idea. He’ll probably reject it, but either way, I at least would not awkward about it.

Offer to take him to dinner over it then, if he refuses you’ll donate the equivalent amount to something he hates.

My thoughts have always leaned heavily towards less paperwork and more personal fun. Why do you feel a need for approval when you can just have your type of fun at will?

A long bed f150 is not going to be a disrupter even with a crazy engine.

You’re not allowed to have FUN at events run by the sports car club of america, because the sports car club of america isn’t about ENJOYING sports cars or driving, it’s about SERIOUS FUCKING BUSINESS.
I hate groups that take themselves too seriously. Pull the sticks out of your asses, life’s too fucking short.

It’s a truck there has got to be someone out there with and interesting rally cross candidate that needs a truck who will trade. DSM would be the direction I would head.

Make sure it’s a proper meal...not just soup!
Given current situation, dropping off some beverages of his choice and/or take out (or even gift cards) may suffice as well. I don’t drink, but I generally repay most favors with at least a 6 pack :)

I
s there an Autocross group that would let you run it?

Nothing ruins having fun faster than a rollover accident.

That’s a bummer, if rally cross is the end goal then I’d probably sell it off and use the funds for a good rally cross vehicle.
I don’t know much about the Gambler, but could you Gamble it without the intent of pure and utter destruction? Make it cool, make it fun, use it multiple times, and keep it around as a parts runner in the off times?
![]() 05/26/2020 at 18:15 |

If it’s a risk the driver is willing to accept, then I see no problem with it.
![]() 05/26/2020 at 18:46 |

See what you can trade up or down to. Keep an open seat available for the truck owner. Let him know they wouldn’t let it run for fun, which is 1/2 the reason you got it. Construction workers are always looking for sub $1000 trucks.
![]() 05/26/2020 at 18:54 |

And real fun for everyone else when you blow fluids all over the place, shutting down for a couple hours.

That’s a good call. I don’t drink either, but my house is anything but alcohol free.

I seriously doubt the Chicago SCCA will let me autocross it ... and honestly that doesn’t even sound like all that much fun.

It seems that way.

I saw three rollovers when I ran with Stateline Rallycross. It just put a short pause on the fun.

In consulting with Bill and Birddog, it looks like we’re going to go bombing around the gravel roads by Birddog’s place in Iowa instead of rallycrossing that weekend.
This really sucks for Birddog. He’s been building up a ‘78 C10 for rallycross for about 8 or 9 months. They had origin ally told him that he could run it, but it sounds like they’re not going to now.
Good call on keeping an open seat for the truck’s original own er (yeah, he bought it brand new. The title he gave me lists the mileage as 19)., in whatever I may get to replace the truck.

Did you check the rules before getting?
![]() 05/26/2020 at 19:04 |

You can Gamble without the intention of destroying the vehicle, and that’s certainly a possibility. I think I’m going to go hammer it around the gravel roads nead lapsed Opponaut Birddog’s house in a couple weeks, then reevaluate from there.
![]() 05/26/2020 at 19:05 |

It looks like we’re going to do a bit of a rally on our own, on some rural Iowa gravel roads that weekend instead. My buddy’s response was, “Oh, they don’t want our membership dues or registration fees? Well fuck them then!”

The rules say it can’t be taller than it is wide (it isn’t), but leaves final authority to the event’s safety steward. That guy gave me an unqualified no.
![]() 05/26/2020 at 19:36 |

I suggest stancing it and giving it suicide doors.
![]() 05/26/2020 at 19:55 |

Meh I still prob woulda called first. Sell the thing then.
![]() 05/26/2020 at 19:58 |

Sell it as is and be done with it. Buy your friend dinner and some beer with the nominal proceeds. Save what’s left.

Lol! No.

Dinner and beer are a good call.

I got nothing else to contribute today

He should also look into auto-x. And if they let him run an auto-x event he’d have a leg to stand on for rally-x.
He could go all out and cage it and run a full rally. But there are hoops to jump through, like being a novice you can’t start in a V8. And it has to be low on HP. I looked into it, but it’s not my passion, and to only participate in 1-2 events a year it wouldn’t be worth my time.

Gambler truck?
Otherwise I’d say sell and use the cash for either rust repair on your current truck (if it’s repairable) or just get another rally cross car
![]() 05/26/2020 at 22:19 |
|
He should also check with the Iowa SCCA. They might be a little more easy going.

Ha!
![]() 05/26/2020 at 22:21 |

My truck is repairable, and will be getting repaired this summer regardless.
I don't really want to kill this truck now that I've driven it. It's not ready, it has life left to give.

I showed up to a STL event in my chopped top XJ and asked what I’d have to do to get it to run, they pointed out a missing lug nut/ stud on a wheel.
But I meet Jeff and he was one of my best friends for a while and introduced me to Jalopnik way back in 2008.
I found my way to oppo, but still. I’ll text him next week for what number I do have for him and see if he is available still. Last time I spoke he worked for google in the autonomous division or whatever.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 10:12 |

Then I’d say sell it and get a gambler/rally cross car and maybe even a little extra cash in the bank. Trucks always sell and since it’s the beginning of summer, no one will care that it’s 2wd
![]() 05/27/2020 at 10:33 |

It’ll be a good landscaping/construction truck.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 10:38 |

Unrelated, but I’ve been meaning to ask you, would you be interested in some micromachine playsets? It’s a truck that folds into a city and a couple small military bases
![]() 06/06/2020 at 00:02 |
|
Hmmm.... how much would you be selling it for if you do? I’m having thoughts, pretty sure I should just ignore them, but they’re there. Lol
That sucks they won’t let you run though. Do they allow any trucks?
![]() 06/06/2020 at 00:08 |
|
I honestly don’t know what I would sell it for. I’ll give you first crack at it if I do decide to let it go.
The actual rule is the vehicle has to be wider than it is tall. But from there it’s up to the safety steward’s discretion. That guy told me, “some mini trucks might qualify.”
Do you remember Josh from Stateline Rallycross? He's the guy who ran the show there. He contacted me after my rejection, and offered to go to bat for us to be allowed to run, so long as our trucks met that rule. I may take him up on that the next time they're at Byron, but for now we're going to stick with backroads bombing.

I was going to say that a stock rwd f150 is probably less likely to roll than something like a Subaru crosstrek

I would think so too.
