Kinja'd!!!

Finally found a buyer for my A4. At 5 years and 54k miles, it’s the longest I’ve ever owned a car. Far and away the nicest car I’ve ever owned, and likely will own for a while.

It never once let me down, never stranded me, never got stuck in the snow or had a weird unexplainable malady that aging German cars are notorious for.

The new owner purchased it for his son, who is learning to drive a manual. Such a fantastic car for a teenager.

It’s bittersweet. With 97k on it I knew my days of worry free driving were getting numbered. Also, with a single income now and a new house, we could use the cash way more than an extra vehicle.

Since the Audi is gone now, the Rover has to step up to the plate for daily driver duties. I finally got around to installing a new cap, wires, and plugs. After I spent some timing resetting the timing, it’s running better that it ever has in my 4 years of ownership.

Took it for a test drive last night. Doggo pic for your time.

... how is a manual A4 a good car for a teen? It’s just going to get gooned to death the second he’s competent at driving stick, or the second he thinks he’s good at driving stick.

Dailying your Rover should be interesting! I look forward to updates on that one.

It’s fast enough to be fun, but likely not fast enough to get him into any real trouble. It’s tough to break traction, even on wet pavement surprisingly. Also, it’s new enough to have a decent amount crash safety protection , so when he does bin it around a tree at least he will be ok.

That’s reasonable.

Have you seen how cheap bolt-ons and chinese knock-off bolt-ons are getting for these cars though? Depending on the motor, it can be brought over 300 whp for under a grand.

I’ve seen plenty of teens want to learn stick shift but not care about modding. If the kid’s responsible, then I don’t see this as a major concern, nor too far out of the ordinary.

This has the 3.2 v6, not the turbo 4. Not a lot of mods available and hard to add boost to a high compression engine like that. I think the CR is 13.5:1. He has about 210 at the wheels which is more than enough to keep him happy.

Based on the 2.0T wagon I had, I’d say it’s an awesome car to learn stick on except you will pay dearly for dumping the clutch too much because these A4s simply will not break traction and a clutch job is still more than $1,000.

Seems like the compression ratio is 12.5:1 from Wikipedia .

Its not really a “fun” car to launch as its not really braking traction on a straight line and its quite heavy , i don’t think its a big risk that the clutch will be a victim.

And its an understeer queen on its stock form, especially mine that is with a standard chassis (smaller anti-roll bars and softer suspensions than the sport chassis /S line/S and RS, every one adding 1mm to the rear anti-roll bar diameter ) and the heavy 3.0 TDI up front (50kg/110lbs heavier than the 3.2 V6) .

Here are my new front tires after something like 500km, mostly city driving (not only, obviously) :
