Skinny tires.
This oil looks like wet jelly during Arizona desert winter.

Thank goodness I still live in a world of telephones, car batteries, handguns , and many things made of zinc.

Thanks! It’s the only helmet I have ever had that gets more questions/comments than the bikes I’ve owned.

The shop manual recommends 20w50 for “extreme high temperatures”. It’s supposed to be almost 44C by the end of the week. We usually don’t start seeing that until late June/early July. I think it’s going to be a hot one this year.

With our summer temps I might as well use olive oil.

Best not to combine the two.

Once had a friend lose and oil filter on an SV650. He kept it up, but said it felt like he was on ice. This bike will dump over on sandy streets. Thankfully it’s light enough and small enough that you can just catch it like a dirt bike.

Yeah, that's pretty thick! I use 15-40 diesel oil on my scooters.

right - mine takes 5w30 and wife’s is that nearly Gatorade consistency 0w20 stuff... Wonder if a higher zinc content product would do anything for newer motors.

Curious, where did you buy that? Vr1 was recommended for older engines for the zinc content, but I haven’t seen it anywhere

I used to put 20w-50 in my old Datsun that had a worn engine so it wouldn’t build oil pressure unless I used the thick stuff.

The zinc is actually ZDDP. The phosphorous in ZDDP can screw up catalytic converters. VR1 is kind of the “lite” version of their racing oil. It has more zinc than their other oils, but with an additive package that keeps the phosphorus in the oil, so you can use it on modern cars. They make a “not street legal” version that would probably screw up a modern car. I wo uldn’t use this in a regular vehicle as it is pretty pricey. I only need 1.5L of it for a change. I rev the nuts off this bike and figure the extra protection is worth it.

Cheaper in the 5qt jugs, think it’s 30ish. Even before they released the big jug that O’Reilly’s always had the single quart on sale, at least if you bought 5.

I got it at one of the chain stores. I think it was autozone, but they don’t always have it. I have an old 350 that’s pretty tuned up, but this stuff is too expensive for me to use in that. Yes, the higher ZDDP is better for wear protection. Can’t put too much in modern cars because the phosphorous will react with catalytic converters. The VR1 is the toned down one that you can still use with cats. They make a “not street legal” version with less additives. That’s the one to get. I think the name of it is actually “not street legal”.

Yeah, just looked up and the regular price is only $8. Not sure why I thought I paid a bunch for it (I bought the oil a little while ago.

standard oil for Harley Sportsters and big twins is 20W-50.

It’s listed as the weight to use in “extreme hot environments” in the Honda manual with 10w40 being the general use weight.

vr1 used to be 1450 zinc ppm, but a couple folks pelican foru ms had their oil tested and were getting “ only”1300. They were qu estioning if they were reducing it due to morons running it in new cars,” because if its for racecars so it must make my car faster!” /s
The vavloline NSL is 1600.
Also a good one is Brad Penn if you’re looking for high zinc.

My Jaguar would like that — the old XK motor probably should have ZDDP but it’s a 1985 model so it has a cat. I run 10-40 in winter but 20-50 in summer as it seems like the pressure stays up a little better when stuck in traffic on a hot day.
I run Brad Penn “green” 20-50 in the TR6.

Yeah, it’s the phosphorous in ZDDP that screws up new cars. Valvoline states that VR1 is ok to use in new cars. The “NSL” stuff is the real deal.

Valvoline states that the VR1 is okay with cars with cats (they put an additive in to help bind up the phosphorous). They have another formula meant for vehicles without emission systems.
