10 passengers in a 2002 Ford Explorer. Only driver was wearing a seatbelt, all 9 other occupants ejected. Police believe excessive speed and a blown tire is to blame.

People are fucking lunatics. I saw this video last night, I urge you to not watch it. Just read the article.

So I know it was tried once and failed, but I’m totally in favor of cars that refuse to go into gear unless occupied seats are buckled.

In any event, most overloaded car I’ve ever been in is a Honda Accord sedan with 9 college students. Was a local, low speed trip though, so I’m pretty sure doing New York to Baltimore with 6 in the same car was considerably worse. Safety-wise.

I can testify that 7 kids in such an Explorer is a tight fit. Why would they fit 3 more in the cargo area? Just plain stupid. Make two trips. It’s not worth it.

The 82 Rabbit I drove as a kid wouldn’t start if the belts weren’t buckled. I think it was successfully argued that it constituted a safety issue.

I don’t know the circumstances of the drive, but it may well have been a whole family on a long drive, so two trips weren’t possible. That certainly happens a lot here in TX.

Maybe you’re right, but the risk is unacceptable on a long trip. Rent or borrow another car if you are going to go on such a trip.

A different station reported that the family was driving from San Antonio to Austin for a family gathering.

Horrible how some  weren’t even to see their extended family again after the lockdown. Probably that would have been the first time in months.

Police didn't cite complete idiocy as well?

Two dead family members, they probably don’t need a ticket on to p of that.

It was made mandatory in ‘73 and repealed in ‘74 because people loathed it. I’m not sure if this is because they were unreliable, or just because a shocking number of people didn’t wear seat belts back then. I suspect failures would have been annoying, but I suspect the latter far the overriding factor, given that this was a policy designed to make people do something they didn’t want to.

Oh great, now there are going to be a bunch of lawsuits from Ford Explorers having tire failure and killing people. Oh, nevermind.

Seriously , so sad that the kids pay the price of adult neglect/stupidity.

That old Rabbit also had passive restraints, which people also hated. I found them completely innocuous. In fact, the belt connected to the door, and you could use it to pull the door closed.

My grandma had one of these, we could do six up in the regular seats and four kids in the rear fold down troop seats. These people needed a van.

And probably nobody in your grandma’s day wore a seatbelt.

I do remember seatbelts in the back, my mom would make us use them in any car. The funny thing is when my grandma drove my cousin and I somewhere, just the two of us, we would be like ten feet from my grandma.

If you open the photo in another tab/window, and then look closely, you’ll see that he is looking up, and you see the shadow under his chin.

To be fair, an old station wagon was a lot less susceptible to flipping over than an early ‘00s Explorer.

Both. People didn’t like having to buckle their belt if they were just shuffling cars around in the driveway, or if they wanted to lean further out the window for backing up, plus the sensor s were too sensitive, throwing your briefcase on the passenger seat could trigger it. Also, of course, seatbelt usage remained pretty low, especially for those of a certain age, well into the 1980s, if not a bit longer.

I’m totally in favor of cars that refuse to go into gear unless occupied seats are buckled.

Yeah, I think I like that version better than having it disable the starter circuit. It’s nice to let the engine run a bit, even if only for a few seconds for the idle to settle down before heading out, and buckling up after starting t he engine gives you something to do for a few seconds.

Especially in cold weather! Man I’d hate to have to buckle up and start the car, only to unbuckle again to clear the snow off...
