And it looked like this:

Kinja'd!!!

It was a promotional set released in 2002 and sold at Legoland Deutschland, and it is extremely rare. There appear to have even been a couple minor variations of it with different wheels as well, some of which are a bit weird:

I can tell you from experience that that wheel and tire combination will not roll well, those tires are too large for that type of rim and will rub on the axles. Perhaps that’s why they made another version of the set...

But other than the nifty chrome “macaroni” bricks that make up the rollbar, these are all fairly common parts and it’s not a complicated design, so you could easily build one yourself if you wanted.

So there you go,  a bit of rare Lego car trivia that no one talks about!

That’s a lot of chrome rollover bar and nowhere near round enough to be a TT but this is cool.

That looks nothing like a TT...Although thats my issue with most of the Lego cars.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was designed by employees of the park... That would explain the simple design, and the numerous variations of it. There were at least three different wheel/tire combinations used, and some of the sets were blue instead of red!

Bricklink could be my downfall. I don't know because I don't allow myself on there.

It tends to have the best prices for used Lego... Just only browse it when you’re actually looking to buy something. So... much... cheap Lego...

I made a post about those a while back... they’re pretty advanced models for the time. Very neat.

I think the Audi set was meant to be just a cheap little promotional thing, and considering the multiple revisions/color changes, non-standard packaging, fairly simple design,  low number of sets produced, and the fact that it was only sold at Legoland Deutschland, I think this set was the work of Legoland employees rather than Lego itself.

I totally agree with everyone else, it looks nothing like an Audi TT. But I knew about this set for an entirely different reason. I don’t remember the source, but I found this on-line LEGO book for free about different advanced techniques legal and supposedly illegal. An illegal building technique is putting a piece under any undo stress. It sighted this Audi set that was only available at LEGO land has having an illegal connection in the roll- bar that had to be stressed to make the connection. I believe that makes it more valuable to LEGO fanatics as well.
