Bare naked wires?

Anyone ever seen random bear wires integrated into their cars’ wiring looms? Noticed this today while looking over my car, preparing to drive it 1,000 miles to Colorado. It is  coming off of the wiring loom for my Idle Air Control Valve on my 1997 LS400.

Its a bare metal wire it seems, with no sheathing and a lot of corrosion. I pulled back some of the covering , it looks completely factory and like it goes all the way into the main engine loom. The tape around the loom also had foil of some sort, probably for interference protection. WHY would there be a bare metal wire? There is also a black wire that goes nowhere but it is fully sheathed and taped against the loom, properly terminated. IACV isnt missing any wires.

No, it’s Barenaked LADIES, not WIRES.

No idea about the wires tho.

option one, its there to peel back and remove sheathing.

option two, it’s a ground wire. if you have dedicated ground wire, see option one.

Secret option 3 - it’s there for something. If everything in the car works, then it serves no purpose other than to discourage DIYers.

The bare wire is to ground out electromagnetic interference. W hen power passes through a wire it creates a weak magnetic field, when the current stops the field collapses which can disrupt sensitive signal wires nearby due to mutual ind uction.

Theses c am and crank sensor use magnets to induce a voltage as the crank spins, a toothed gear is on the crank pully and the teeth are spaced so that the ecu can count the voltage spikes and know what position the crank is at, same concept for the cam. These wires are usually wrapped in bare wire too under their loom, also they are usually twisted together (known as a twisted pair) in the hopes that EMI will effect both wires in the same way leading to somethi ng readable to the ecu.(reduce “ noise” )

It’s a shield wire. Grounded only at one end to sink any electrical noise it picks up.

I’m still looking for the bear. I can’t find it.

I was hoping someone would make a bear wires joke lol I was too lazy to edit that mistake

Ive seen wires on electronics like laptops and such that have bare wire that creates a sheath for other wires to reduce interference. I kind of figured this random wire might be for a similar purpose, but its not wrapped around anything. It just ends and is starting to crumble and corrode. Also I dont see anything like this on any other parts of the loom, including the crankshaft and cam sensors. Maybe ill have to dig through some wiring diagrams to see how this is supposed to be...

They definitely exist on the cam and crank because I've pulled those looms apart for a megasquirt. The ones I've seen where usually grounded but didn't necessarily have a connection to anything on one of their sides
