That was an excellent video - thank you.

I especially loved all the Concorde footage.  I saw one of them taxi and take off while waiting in a plane for takeoff circa 2000 and it was awesome to see in person.

My wife grew up in an apartment on the final approach to Kai Tak. Her grandparents lived across the hall. We visited her grandmother in 1992, so I got to both land at Kai Tak and watch airplanes from the apartment. The living room had an 8-foot wide bank of windows, and you had to stand close to them to see both wingtips of the landing 747s.

The approach and turn at checkerboard rock was interesting to say the least.

There are plenty of YouTube videos of pilots borking the landing...

Fortunately, my flight’s landing was uneventful. We got free business class tickets to Hong Kong, and having no money at the time, we weren’t going to turn them down. However, St. Louis to Hong Kong on Delta required layovers in Cincinnati and then LAX. This was less than 9 years after the USSR shot down KAL 007, and our pilot was having trouble with communication with the Russian air traffic controllers. That required deviating around Russian airspace and an extra stop in Taipei for fuel. We landed at Kai Tak 35 hours after we left St. Louis. An “exciting” landing wouldn’t have been welcome.
