Libertarian enough to support underage drug abuse

Not libertarian enough for Ayn Rand

Fun fact - I used to be a rabid conservative asshole when I was young and stupid. Ayn Rand was definitely a part of sending me in that direction as I read it when I was 14 . In my early 20's I realized how stupid it all was and that her writings only made sense when thought about holistically and counting in why she wrote it . One’s reaction to her wealthy family losing everything to the rise of Communism which is a traumatic event for sure.

I take in some of Rush’s early works the same way as they have a very similar tone of hard anti-union/anti-socialism in the writings.

My views have since my youth changed very much as I   have realized that there are far more important things than one single person’s ‘ rights’ (very much recognizing my privilege) and to quote S pock ‘The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few’

Also, my grandfather, an old  east cost liberal in the finest tradition, was fond of saying, “A Republican can’t enjoy his dinner unless he knows that somebody else is hungry.”

That is very true statement in my experience. Also where I live , being a republican is also synonymous with good old fashioned racism. If they cops shoot a black teenager the kid was doing something wrong but if they pull over their kid for speeding and give them a warning the cop is being abusive assholes who should have his badge taken away...

Case in point: Paul Manafort was released from prison today and sent to home confinement so he won’t catch the Covid. Meanwhile, thousands of less fortunate prisoners (and prison guards) are getting sick .

It’s insane to me that the party of Lincoln now has this stigma attached... Terribly sad.

Some of it (the shorter stuff like Anthem ) isn’t bad if you take it as some bits of motivational be your best and fight the system. But overall a lot of it is very long and doesn’t hold up once you’re capitalism boner goes away.

Oh I seriously love Rush! They’re an amazing trio and they regularly are in my listening rotation. It’ s just s ome of their works (like the trees or red barchetta) you have a take with a grain of salt.

Yep, it’s the same with drug crime prosecution. Around here meth had been a huge problem in rural counties for decades leading to huge enforcement and incarceration but once heroin hit the high income white neighborhoods it’s a public health problem with those rich people needing help, not criminal prosecution.

I tried to read Atlas Shrug ged and I just couldn’t. First it’s not my type of novel or story and it was just so 1950's it was making my brain hurt.

Oh her. As a clueless student I read both Shrugged and Fountianhead. I thought they were turgid over- blown was te s of time. What did I know know? I was expecting literature. Silly me. What can you expect from a writer who names themselves after their typewriter. Remington- Rand. For a hoot watch the 50's film version of T he Fo untai nhead.  So bad it’s great.

Not only was he proficient behind his enormous kit, he wrote some of the best lyrics, ever. Alex and Geddy are also superb musicians, it’s astounding the music that group wrote and pla yed regularly , they were a three p ie ce band that could outperform pretty much any band out there. I doubt there will ever b e another band like Rush.

For those who want a really good, nonfiction book chronicling the failures of communism and relative benefits of capitalism, I recommend MIG Pilot: The escape of Lt. Viktor Belenko. Far more compelling than a fictional dystopia, it describes real historical life in the Soviet Union and the cultural/societal differences between c ommunism and late 70s US capitalism, as experienced by soviet defector.

Some of the worst “literature” out there. I’ve always had that same idea, her beliefs were formed because she was born into privilege and the bolshies took that away.

It all later decays into the idea of “socialism is evil, but keep your hands off my medicare/social security”, and also no doubt helps the idiotic belief in trickle down fantasy. Rand is a TEM syndrome  enabler.

I feel like that’s something Ayn Rand would do.

I give my kids, and my students, as many ideas as they can handle, and let their brains work. I’ll love them no matter what they end up believing. It’s generally damaged people who gravitate towards the dangerous stuff. You have to fix the damage before you can educate them.

Education is not getting someone to believe  what I think is correct, it’s giving them the proper tools to analyze their environment and make decisions for themselves.
