Might be good as a mixer (didn’t try). Maybe even better than Johnnie with its pungent fruit. Pray the acetone and sour don’t show through .

H ad my first drink over Christmas. Shockingly good.

for cheap, and if it’s available near you, John Barr. Comparable to something between Johnnie Red/Black for $30-35 a handle.
My favorite way to smooth to cost $35 a bottle is Jameson s Caskmates Stout Edition.
One of the best I’ve had is Red Spot (Irish) and another favorite is Redbreast.
Johnnie Blue was disappointing...

there’s such a thing as a good whisky purchase?

Speaking of which, I just cracked a bottle of this I bought duty free a while ago:
Not many / 10, would not recommend.
It seems to have replaced the 12YO as their entry level product, and while its been a while since I tried Glenlivet 12, I recall quite liking it, in an inoffensive introductory-whisky kind of way . For this stuff they seem to have tried to add some weigh t and complexity, but mostly succeeded in ad ding roughness and eau-de-glue . Giant leap backwards, guys.

+1 for the oppositeloch tag

I kinda liked the JW double black and green. ¯\_()_/¯
I’m probably doing it wrong... Years ago, a
coworker gave me a bottle of Whyte and
Mackay from his trip to Scotland
, thought it was good. I generally drink Jameson (esp the black barrel) and need to try the cold brew. Wife can comfortably drink it because they say it’s GF, so that’s a plus. We had fun on their tour - did it back to back w/Guinness though lol.
I am picky about my tequila.

I tried my first Red Breast in February (12 year)
. Super round and super sweet but not in a sickly way. Really enjoyed it.
Blue is growing on me actually . I’ve rec ently found more smoke in it than I had before .

Not a big scotch fan unless its citrusy over peaty. To me the answer is always Wild Turkey for bang for the buck. Nice rye burn

agreed on the Redbreast... when being spendy I prefer Irish, but Scotch on the cheap to mid-range is my go to. Think it’s because the more you spend in Scotch you get smoother and more oak y/peaty where as the Irish gets smoother and sweeter. Lower priced Scotch is more flavorful and complex than Irish IMO.

They shoul d just drop this and go with the Captains Reserve if they just have too (haven’t tried it, but it can’t be worse) . Everything else in their lineup is fine.
We kept the 12 here and it got rebranded. It is there to come back.

Citrusy over peaty?
You must try Rock Island. :-)x

My plan is just to ignore Glenlivet for another decade or so and revert to Glenmorangie as my default can’t-be-assed-thinking whisky.
I feel a moral obligation to finish the bottle now though, as a sort of farewell to duty free spirits. I think it’ll be a while before I see an airport again.

It’s been a while but I think I liked the Superstition better than the 10. Just got the 16. It’s very good .
Haven’t tried any of their new offerings.

All whiskey is terrible, you just convince yourself you like it because it’s supposed to give you man-cred or something

You won’t regret it.

Had a bottle and still have some in a taster pack. I appreciate the craft but isn’t it time to add a 10 or 12 year to your permanent line? :-)x

By viewing all whiske y and whiskey drinkers as such, you are limiting your own experiences.

my own experience is that whiskey is gross

The Glenlivet 15 is good. Founder’s Reserve is
not good. In that price range I like Nikka From the Barrel, or Suntory Toki

Recently we decided to try a new cheap-ish bourbon, got Wild Turkey 101. I would not recommend
it, we drowned it in coke or ginger ale and went back to Bullei
t. Next up will be some Rye since we’re almost out of Prospector...

I dig this thread. I’m mainly a beer drinker who also appreciates good whiskeys and good Cabernet.

Thanks . I like the fancy stuff once in while but try to keep it pretty good and affordable in the meantime. Beer too. Tradition of one bottle of wine a year.

I’m working my way through a bottle of S azerac R ye these days. It’s great. Not too bad on the wallet either.

I wouldn’t even say I have a pinky toe dipped into Bourbon or Rye. Though, I did read that 101 was great.
I tried Makers over the holidays. Nah, not for me. I have a feeling I just need to find one to use as a doorway. Been looking very hard and for a very long time for some Elijah Barrel Proof.
![]() 05/11/2020 at 23:10 |

I think Maker’s is okay, but there’s much better at that price or just a bit lower or higher. Four Roses surprised the heck outta me. For it’s price: solid 7.5/10
I don’t think I’ve had 101, but I thought Rebel Yell was okay.

Best stuff I ever had
B unnahabhain 25
It’ll cost dearly though.
The one I usually want to have around is Glenlivet 15. It's a lot more reasonable.

I really wasn’t a fan, though I’d seen and heard it was a good one. I prefer rye over bourbon though, and Japanese whisky and Scotch
over rye. Crown Royal Northern Harvest was actua
lly
my go-to decent rye, but Prospector from Odd Society is a hell of a lot better. I’ve never tried Makers or Elijah Barrel Proof. I found out recently that Nikka suspended production of several lines until more has aged, so I snagged some of the last Coffey Malt I could find in the province, I’m looking forward to that. Just have to go to the island to get it from my sister

It’s not particularly easy to find in Australia either, often sold out.
my go to is The Balvenie Double Wood 12

Two I’d strongly not suggest drinking, The Ardmore Scotch whisky, it’s absolutely vile even when diluting it down heavily with coke. I ended up tipping it down the sink. There wa s no other use for it.
The second one is a Welsh whisky called Penderyn, again, vile, but nowhere near as bad as The Ardmore over all. Was okay when dilu ted with coke and a lot of ice.
