... certain hex head sizes seem to be more commonly used ? Turns out there’s a standard for that. Now, this only helps if the manufacturer actually follows said standard... results may vary.

Kinja'd!!!

Someone should confirm that this is actually the SAE standard... I don’t work with SAE in this context much.

It’s an ASME standard .

Or we could just get rid of SAE and save everyone a bunch of trouble :)

Good to know. Most standard fasteners that I utilize in my field are ASME standard socket-head cap screws - I don’t usually run into situations where hex head fasteners are used in that context. It’s only when working on personal stuff that hex head shows up, and that’s almost always metric.

The rust belt laughs in the face of such standards. Gotta love it when a 10mm bolt head corrodes down to a 3/8"... Just grab whatever fits.

I was surprised when these charts were posted earlier because in my experience, 12mm is my second most used wrench next to 10mm.  Although that experience is based on Japanese cars...or the JK.

12mm is def initely not common on German and French cars : 10, 11 and 13mm are may more common.

Odd how JIS threads are coarser up to 10mm, when they revert to the fine thread.

Southeastern PA isn’t too bad in this regard until you get to exhaust stuff on 10+ year old vehicles. Depending on the job it’s a 50/50 choice between a socket set and a sawzall.

Not sure I noticed that before. There’s likely a reason - I wonder what it is?

Thanks for the chart!

Makes sense that they would follow DIN and ISO.

It woud simplify the supply chain. Browsing on my work pc while conf call d ragged on, I think there was/is a minor difference as a couple sources said that an ISo screw can strip a JIS female thread. To the point there used to be a stamp mark in the 60's to warn of the difference.

Intriging rabbit hole.

Interesting how often 11mm is skipp ed in wrench sets. On the 914 everything is 10, 13, 15, 17 20 . but brake lines are 11 and throttle cable 7 which is just a PITA to find.
