Always wanted to build one of these as a sleeper car and call it the Ford Siesta.

You should bid on it.

Depends on if you have someone to deliver it to the port for you, or if you need full service. I looked into getting a Lada Niva here (Verm ont ) from Spain, if I had someone to deliver it to a port with Roll on-Roll off (RoRo) service I could have had it shipped and cleared customs to a local-ish port (Boston) for about $1200. Using a full service shipper that would pick the car up, pack it in a seacan (the Niva is too tall to double stack in a can, so that didn’t help the quote) and send it containerized to a local depot (Albany NY) was about $6000.

It seems remarkably intact for a 40+ year old car.

That is the best gearshift knob I’ve seen in a lo ng time. If the less obvious fixes are up to that standard, it’s a steal.

In fairness, that’s  about the only way you can get the sunroof on a 1970s economy car to be watertight. Cheap sunroofs are the dumbest idea ever ( followed closely by expensive sunroofs) .

Admittedly, he could have made just a leeeeeee tle effort to smoo th off the sealer - it’s not that hard to wet your finger and run it over the goop .

Exactly - it’s semi-permanent, but can easily be done so that it doesn’t look like complete ass.

I can’t see myself ever buying a car without a sunroof (or more accurately, a power moon roof), unless of course it’s a convertible or something. They are wonderful features, and from my personal experience concerns about leaking are vastly overstated.

I am however willing to believe that a 1970 s subcompact might not have had exceptional sunroof quality.

I always thought these looked better than the contemporary VW Rabbit, but around here they all turned to rust or scrap long ago.

Everyone’s mileage varies, I guess.

For myself, I’ve had probab ly half a dozen cars with sunroofs of the 30 or 40 I’ve ow ned. I’ve never opened any of them beyond trying it out, and I find the increased light/heat from the glass ones posi tive ly irritating. Plus of those, two of them (both older cars) had leak issues , one due to a dodgy seal (which then turned out to be NLA) and the other a blocked drain , which was easily fixed but had ca u sed headliner damage and corrosion of the roof panel as a consequence be fo re I noticed. Also, when I was working for an OEM in the 90s, sunroofs were comfortably our top warrantee issue for pretty much the whole time I was there.

Modern cars are no doubt miles better, as they are with most things. But still: not a fan.

So the difference between RoRo and ‘full service’ is about $4800? There is some profit to be made here by fellow European members. I used to live within an hour of an international RoRo port (Emden, Germany) , and have driven a BMW E30 Touring there once, for export to the US. Really not that difficult.
