Coronavirus pretty much kills innovation and development, in the near future, at Airbus and Boeing

Isn’t Boeing the company that kept trying to ride the same pony for so long they ended up killing a few hundred people? But yeah, Corona...

I think Boeing already killed innovation and development in the cynical poorly engineered 737 maxx, the 1967 ford fairlaine of the airliners as a badly configured retromod! Shame!

I don’t know if this is much of a surprise.  Boeing was already on the back foot, I can’t figure how they would be doing anything but focusing on survival right now

How many MAXs are going to go straight to the crusher? Boeing is f**ked. Airbus will now sell a million A321s.

We need some blended wing aircraft to really improve fuel economy .

They’ve been working to replace the 737 for years, the Max was just supposed to be a temporary stopgap to counter the A320neo until the new plane was ready, had Airbus not reengined their plane, Boeing would never have done the Max and would have gone straight to working on a new model.

This just means the 737 Max will stay in production even longer, probably way longer, than originally planned. Maybe into the 2040s or beyond. Assuming commercial airliners are still allowed to fly.

Thing is, if Boeing hadn’t dicked around and gone ahead and built, or at least designed, the 797, they might be perfectly poised to capture the post-Covid market. Now their just boned.

They don’t have the money though. Between slowing new orders, cancellations of existing orders, slowing spare parts and service, and the continuing remedial work on the Max, thats all they can handle

We’re going to see lots of aircraft dismantled well before their 20th birthday over the next year-2 years. I'd say every non-VIP A380 is pretty much dead now, and we'll see loads of middle aged 737NGs and A320ceos going to the rapper as well, simply to save on storage fees.

Doesn’t sound like you’re innovating if your only real competitor catches you with your pants down with an entirely new aircraft. And then your stopgap is to try and trick regulators so it’s cheap, but ends up being very dangerous.

There's already not much innovation. Most new plane models are just refinements and modifications of old ones.

Airbus will increase production of the A380:

1) New seating arrangement has private cabins up front, and 1 x 1 x 1 seating in the back, with 6 ft between rows.

2) Gas is free

3) Profit!

It isn't an entirely new aircraft, the A320neo is a re-engined and upgraded A320, which dates to 1984.

Well, Reuters today has A irbus claiming they are on life support. The thing that keeps Boeing solvent is their defense arm. They make more off weapons than the commercial division. Airbus has a defense arm too but it’s tiny compared to the Lazy B. The one big project A400 Military Transport was a failure for many reasons and is bleeding the consortium. I would guess that for now Boeing gives away the next year of production on the Max a nd develops the 787-3, An already existing variant of the 787 with shorter wings, the -3 is that 757 replacement airline are looking for. Safe, existing platform with some new fancy engine.

I tried picking coffee in Hawaii once, my friend got a job and wasn’t hating it so I said I would come and try since it was sort of an open call for workers. My family owned a coffee plantation in the 1800 s there so I thought it would be cool. It was not cool! Far from cool, we need robots for this stuff and less people on Earth.

I half wonder if they won’t end up there sooner rather than later. I know those interiors have som e degree of reconfigurablity..

T oo much of an improvement in terms of range and fuel efficiency to ignore , and Boeing’s going to be offering great deals to move their year-end leftover inventory to make room for the 2021 models.

Assuming that Boeing can get the MAX to be stable, I am betting there are a bunch of MAX  freighter conversions . Cargo doesn’t care about a planes reputation.  Doesn’t help Boeing much though.

Boeing has been dancing a jig since the 787 rolled out three years late... like a firewalker made of straw, every step is a move away from whatever burned them last

Poorly managed companies kinda deserve to die. If they were really the pinnacle of capitalist efficiency and sound practices, they would be able to weather the storm.

I agree that this is going to hamstring things in the short term. But if the big guys fail, there will he a bunch o f innovative little guys trying to fill the void.

even with shorter wings, and cabin thats a lot of bulk to move through the air.
