If I found an Ur quattro that needed an engine I would use the new Audi 5 cylinder

I’m in the angry dome this morning, but mostly because a customer started in with a nonsense list of things they’d already been provided and things that didn’t (and shouldn’t) exist, along with some things that could exist in another world where nothing works like it actually does (and they should know that).

I’m not generally beholden to the idea that a car should or shouldn’t have a certain engine- and if someone la swapped a ur-quattro it wouldn’t bother me much but there has to be about 100 other, better, engine choices for that car...
Assuming you don’t keep it stock; I suspect a Porsche 951/ 968 engine could have a similar bolt pattern on the bell housing...

Someone else suggested ditching the 10v for a 20v and ditching CIS for EFI. First of all, CIS isn’t even that bad. Grow up and just buy a dwell meter. There’s like five components total to keep track of. Ridiculous.

I saw a new Audi on the road this weekend with a California tag that said M12 H8R

He brings it to Katie’s from time to time . Or used to, back when we were allowed to go places and do things.
Once things start back up (I’m sure they eventually will) and he brings it, I’ll let you know.

It’s got a great story - it was a grey-market import into the US back in ‘81 (they didn’t start selling them here until ‘83). The original owner brought it over and raced it in SCCA Rally and it apparently made the rounds on an ice racing circuit. After several years it was retired and then sat in a barn for a while.
My friend got it, I dunno, probably 10 years ago, and did a “rally resto-mod” on it. It already had been tuned up to between 250 and 300 HP from the factory 200, and had a half cage and some racing buckets installed. He refreshed the motor, replumbed it, and did a bunch of restoration work on the body and chassis, replacing stuck calipers, busting rust, etc. He then added the custom wheels, replaced the front street bumper with a steel beam and kevlar front body bits off a WRC car, added the WRC wing and rear oil cooler, and then added the front lights and all the rally livery.
I’ve ridden in it twice and it is an absolute blast. Its absurdly fast by 80's standards and still quick by today’s, and makes all the right noises. The inline 5 sounds amazing under boost and it burbles and pops on downshifts. It’s a hoot!

That’s an awesome story, I’m glad he still hoons it as it should be hooned.

He drives it sparingly, but it does go to some of the bigger shows like Carlisle and Radwood, and it occasionally comes to Katie’s Cars n Coffee . He’s got some other awesome cars as well, including a Lancia Delta Integrale (which I got to drive last summer) , a Ford Raptor, and his daily beater is a Volvo 940. He also recently sold a Peugeot 205 GTI.

Replacing an inline-5 with a V8 is not allowed. But FWD Coupes were available with 4 cylinder engines. I wouldn’t get mad i f someone modified one of those.

So the ad says it’s had a head gasket replaced. My Audi read between the lines tells me the car has been a money pit, I blew the head gasket and am now tired of dumping money into it, time to sell it....
I say this because every owner of a relatively low production or somehow exotic Audi has said this to themselves after the MIL pops on, or some other error message pops up on the dash.

Owned one for 12 years, n o it isn’t. H as its flaws, yes. Needs tuning to become truly fun, b ut super capable and rewarding to drive. I’d still have mine if I hadn’t sold it when we bought a house.

Dumbass (not you, the LSbro) . I owned one for a long time, there’s nothing like a boosty 5 cylinder. That said, V8 swapped Audis are cool, I worked for a place that swapped Audi 4.2s into 80s and 90s. A riot to drive, but nothing like the fives.

THIS THIS THIS. TTRS engine is amazing, and in an UrQ or 4000 would decimate all.

CIS is wonderful, stone simple , and misunderstood . I particularly love it because as long as you can make fuel pressure, it’ll get you home. I nerd out and still have one CIS car , but it sucks for making power. The 20V is great because it actually breathes well, likes to rev (it’s a VW 16V with one more cylinder) , and can be tuned easily, both mechanically and electronically . The 10Vs aren’t crossflow, they have a pretty low ceiling for power, and their max potential isn’t even breathing hard for a 20V. Advantages to both.

Is there a writeoff Gallardo somewhere with a perfectly good V10?

Also not a fan of LS swaps. The only exception for me is if it’s replacing a wank-el.
