I’ve printed some bearing shims for farm equipment, and my automatic skein winder has proved highly successful, and even mildly profitable, I still love Pickle Rick, and all my printer enhancements, but my actual favorite bits are the sight mount and magazine holders I made for my Ruger SR22 and Eu Jin Sumatra respectively.

I should really print a few of these to get some more space in my tool cabinet, but that would mean id have to organize said tool cabinet and... no man, just... no.

Haha so that is my first “project”...3D print new things to re organize my already super organized workshop.

For reference, I’m using a CR10 with custom cooling and simplify3D as my slicer

Kinja'd!!!

The pink spool is drying out since it wasnt stored in a drybox, the tan spool by the hairspray (used instead of a glue stick, way easier IMO) in the upper cabinet is what i print from. Moving towards a DIY print dryer in the near future.

I love the 1911 stand on thingiverse personally. Havent printed in anything other than PLA/PLA+ so far, but once I get a new hotend and a print dryer im moving to Nylon and Carbon Fiber filaments

Mine is a suburban 2 car 20x20 with two motorcycles and both me and my roommate use it as a workshop. Also the resin printer and reloading bench live in there. I REALLY need a shed, but other priorities take precedence.

So I bagged my reloading setup for the printer haha. Then I found all the cool reloading stuff you can make! I really only shoot of 9mm regularly,  and it’s hard to justify reloading for 9. 45 makes more sense but I have a TON of .45.

PLA is extremely useful, don’t knock it . It’s easy to print, has excellent dimensional stability, very high tensile strength (though it is brittle and temperature/UV sensi tive ), and provides a good surface finish that can be sanded, painted and glued easily (as well as being available is lots of cool fi lament colors) . Nylon, frankly, is a bit of a bitch. If you can get good bed adh esion, you still have to deal with difficult to remove supports, shrinkage, water absorption and discoloration. It *IS* inc redibly strong, but it’s enough of a PITA that I use it only when I really need the strength. CF filaments are often more brittle than non-CF-loaded versions, and though the surface finish is very cool, they also e rode brass nozzles like mad and often don’t add much, if any th ing to print strength. The chopped fiber bits are just too short and the base plastics don’t adhere to the CF that well anyway. I’m a big fan of PETG as a more resilient filament than PLA that’ s still pretty easy to deal with (it is somewhat hyg roscopic, and needs to be stored well and/or dried before printing ) .

I print in a heated (by the printer anyways) enclosure, and will be doing a DIY print dryer out of a food dehydrator. I’ve had zero issues with print adhesion so far since when the hairspray I use to help on a glass bed gets heated to about 70C you will rip the bed off before you rip the print off.

I LOVE eSun PLA+, the amount of shit it can take is incredible. I’m wanting nylon for things I would be taking outside a lot, or that I need to actually rely on. PETG is one of the filaments I’m going to try out as a stop gap since I don’t need a new hotend for that just yet, also want to give TPU a chance for wonky shit.

I keep buying by the 1k for whatever I shoot most (9mm/.223 currently) but I want to give 6.5 Grendel a shot and to really push the performance envelope you need really high quality ammo, reloading gives me the ability to tune my ammo to my specific firearm more than the ability to have cheap range ammo.

DO IT!
I had an Ender3, just moved to the CR10. My personal reccomendation is skip the ender, and spend the first few months printing mods for the CR10. Slap it in an enclosure (keeps temps stable, I also blew the power supply on my ender by overheating it, so thats why i reccomend the CR10, seperate electronics enclosure) and print away, the pikachu thor print i posted has not been cleaned up at all, that’s how it came off the print bed. It printed the tail in midair.

Yeah you have to buy by the case if you shoot with any kind of consistency. I’ve never reloaded rifle rounds, I’m  interested but nervous about lube/taper and all that. Even by the thousand, .223/.556 is still nearly a quarter every time ya pull the trigger.

Yeah, my new AR upper is my first “nice” upper since my current one is PSA, and my previous ones were radicals. I’m going to have to get a bunch of different stuff to see what it likes and then tune my ammo preferences for range/defense accordingly. At least, if all this corona dies down and everything reopens.

My best job so far is this woggle I drafted up with our scout group logo , it’s kinda become my test case part.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s not as good as if I’d had a pro parametric CAD progr am but FreeCAD is pretty great for being free.

I’ve just bought some wicked pink and a cheap white ABS spool too so will see how they look in that.

I’m also quite fond of these little bosses I whipped up in a morning to build my janky ass lawn sign wire and plastic bag enclosure; they’re basically a CAD 101 tutorial but it was cool to go from my brain to working part in l ess than a day. D espite its ugliness the enclosure works a s proo f of concept and has fixed my layer splitting issue so when things open up and I can get supplies again I’ll build something pretty out of clear plastic panels.

PETG is also highly UV resistant, resistant to many chemicals (including gasoline and oil) , and performs very well in shock/strain applications. I have used the eSun and Amazon PETG, but I like the 3DSolutech PETG better. It’s still not as strong as Nylon, and it’s heat deflection performance isn’ t that great (though better than PLA), but I’ve used it for plenty of functional parts with excellent results. R egula r TPU is fun, but if you aren’t afraid of expensive filament just pick up some Taulman PCTPE, that shit is amazing.

that PCTPE is less expensive than I thought. I’ll have to give that a shot after I get a new hotend. My biggest concern is heat/UV since I’m looking for some stuff for the motorcycle.

Dude I used a cardboard box for like 2 months. Forreal look at extending your wiring and get your power supply out of there though, or vent some heat out there. I blew my ender3 power supply up in an enclosure because it got too hot.

Polycarbonate is even more heat resistant than Nylon, if you create a setup that can print Nylon effectively, you should be able to make PC work. It’s pretty sweet. Take it slow, PC has a very slow melt profile, trying to print it too fast will lead to poor results, but if you’re patient the results are hella strong and highly heat resistant, interlayer adhesion is tricky, and a heated enclosure will help . I use it in my auto skein winder for the motor mount, it stays rock solid at 80-90C no problem. Just be aware that most PC filament contains BPA and you don’t want to breathe that shit.

PCTPE is right on that border where you might be able to print it without an all metal hotend, the resiliency and layer adhesion is EPIC. I love it.

I’m too lazy to move my PS and control board, that’s the main reason I don’t have an enclosure.

Same, I just got a CR10 and did the same mods (ABL, bantamount, dual 5150, noctua fans, solid bed mounts, etc...) $15 for 3 meter cable extensions is worth it, though I have seen some Ender3 extensions pop up here and there.

Not difficult to print, good sur face quality, flexible (if that’ s what you need), Incredible layer adhesion strength , 400% elongation before break (!!), highly chemical resistant, higher heat resistance than most TPUs. .. I mean seriously, watch these videos (needs a little retraction and cooling fan to al most completely eliminate stringing as seen in Thomas’s video, I also get good bed adhesion with just Elmer’s glue stick ) :

Thanks for the heads up, I’ll look into doing that before summer . I decided against cardboard cos I still don’t totally trust the thing not to catch fire and figure that plastic tends to melt away from heat sources...

I think the cleanup thing is overrated. Get yourself a box of gloves, a roll of paper towels, a bucket with 99% isopropyl, and you’re good to roll. Like, all the extruder stuff and heat settings, and heated plates, and gcode, and blah blah blah is far more complicated than any cleanup on a resin printer, haha.

The main goal is to even out the heat, not trap it. My enclosure with the ender was getting like 100F during prints, since I opened it up a bit when I enlarged it I now  get much lower temps but my print quality is fantastic

Interestingly now I’m getting way less splits but starting to see warping instead (guess those internal stresses gotta go somewhere ), need to find new bed to tip sweet spot . I think I read someplace you only need about 35c in the box to be effective but not sure if that was for PLA or ABS. Think I’ll buy a cheapo thermometer and stick it in sight of the camera to see what’s going on.
