Check out that CPU load drop. It was just working too hard and getting too hot, and the ROI in points wasn’t worth it. I’ll keep running it on my boys’ PCs. We’ve reached 1.1M points, and still climbing.

Fold on, Oppo!

That’s understandable . Except for a day or so trying to keep pace with grindintosecond, I’ve stopped CPU folding on my machine. Even though my 3900x can put up a few hundred thousand points per day, increasing the power draw and heat production by about 50% for a fraction of the points my GPU puts up strikes me as not worthwhile.

Yeah, we only have laptops here, and cheapo laptops at that, so I'm not going there.

For grins, I tried it on my laptop. It only ran while the power was connected, but then the fan ran constantly and it almost got too hot to rest my hands on. Obviously, there are some systems that just aren’t meant to do it.

That naturally leads to meatsinks:

Like some people we know, they just make a lot of heat and noise without getting much work done.

I haven’t done any Folding for years, but FYI, can’t you put a CPU/GPU use cap on it and say like....”Only use 50% of the CPU” or some such? I seem to think that was a thing?

There are three levels you can select: Light, Medium, and Full. I suppose it would be interesting to see the load difference on each of the three settings. This was set to full. Still, the points haul without using the GPU is minimal, even on full power.

I know with the CPU you can limit the number of threads it uses - I pretty much always have mine running 6 of 8 available threads.

I haven’t figured out if there’s a way of limiting the GPU since the client’s “light” setting brings my CPU down to 3 threads and pauses the GPU folding.

Many l aptops, and even many OEM desktop systems from folks like HP or Dell, just don’t have cooling setups intended for extended use at high load.

I dont see a ridiculous amount of CPU load on mine and thermals seem to do ok. However I started last night and have only done 1 work unit. Also, the stop folding button seems to not work since I said finish and then quit, but it didnt quit.

Just keep in mind that there are certain WUs that can only be handled by high thread counts. Also keep in mind F@H cores dont take kindly to more than 22 or so cores per slot, so adjust your setup accordingly if you wish to continue. You can always undervolt for minimal reduction in ppd as well.

The finish button works better if you use the advanced control.

I didn’t manage to find that on the Mac client.

The CPU does different types of jobs than the GPU.Both types are important, and right now CPU jobs are very much more targeted for a current research need.   I doubt any o that is i mportant to you because you seem to be folding for the wrong reasons. Using folding at home to flex your epeen and get points is pretty lame. Folding at home is for donating to a cause, not bragging rights.

And about folding on an iMac... Those things are pretty much trash for anything past web browsing and basic office tasks. They have anemic cooling systems because apple always goes with form over function on their consumer level junk. The heat exhaust port is 1/3 the size of a Dell Latitude Ultrabook. People  eat it up too. Not intelligent people, but people nonetheless.
