Looks nice, would be cool to see RWD sedans making a return.

I’ d rather see them go back to V6 engines or invest more in their turbo 4's. The I6 won’t find its way into their crossovers, but a new V6, turbo V 6 or more powerful turbo I4 definitely could.

If they survive, though, they might be one of the first on the market with a compelling new postvirus model

Those headlights are horrible. Taillights are also gross. The duckbill spoiler is okay I guess, but it seems a bit to hawt, it feel like the artist was aping the new Supra.

I’m not the biggest fan of that rear end, but I like this a lot better than the current 3. Maybe it’ll be in my price range.

This could be a signal they are committing to more RWD models if they indeed are going I6. Depending on the configuration (i.e. overall block length) , the inline 6 may be possible to package transversely - Volvo did it.

Also, Mazda has stated their goal is to move upmarket, so an inline 6 makes sense because they are inherently balanced in both the first and second order. Inline 4s and V6s don’t naturally balance.

Additionally, I’d bet that inline 6 is just an extension of the inline 4. This is why Mercedes is strating to bring back inline 6s, and BMW never left. It’s also what Volvo did with the old inline 4-5-6 engines.  They are a common architecture, just different numbers of cylinders.

They’ll still be in business. They sell well in other areas besides the U.S. and even here, they’re selling better than other brands that are still sticking it out. And, they’re selling better than brands were that decided to leave, too (Suzuki, for one).

Maybe they would sell more sedans if they were called “crew cabs”? Crossover SUVs are stiletto wagons , and they sell like hotcakes. I think you are onto something...

I’m looking forward to this a lot. If it actually happens I’ll probably need to break my hatchbacks-only rule and buy one, assuming I’m still employed and society is still intact by then (both big assumptions at the moment). A RWD, inline 6 sedan with Japanese reliability and (in my opinion, better than) Alfa Romeo design is pretty much the holy grail. Apart from the lack of a wagon option obviously.

The Vision Coupe concept is probably a good indicator of what we’ll get. The render seems to have only followed it for the front and rear ends and ignored the side surfacing, which was its best feature:

It’s not like the 6 is going to be spun off into its own platform/architecture. If the sedan goes I-6 RWD , so will the CX-5 and CX-9, at least. P ossibly even the 3/CX-3/CX-30.

I kind of like the headlights in the CX-9 and CX-5 at the moment. They’re at least a break from the norm and clearly identify the car as a Mazda. But I also miss the simplicity of real beltlines and bumpers. Maybe even rub strips.

I want this Mazda 6 to happen (mostly because I’m planning to buy another car soon, but with some of the models rumored that are coming, I’m trying hard to hold off) but I’ve been taking this with a grain of salt the size of a Miata. RWD and an I6? On top of it being a sedan, those are all things that add up to low sales/canceled models. Fun/interesting to drive isn’t really in the books anymore, and for them to do something like this would make it a niche of a niche.

This concludes me to think that the only way for something like this to work would be for them to do this in a next gen CX-5, which would make it be sort of a spiritual successor to the Infiniti FX.

Mazda has been killing it! The Mazda3 is outselling every competitor and is even pulling customers from nicer Vehicles like BMW. The MX-5 have hit over a million sold. Toyota sells rebranded Mazdas. Toyota and Mazda just finished a 2.6 billion dollar facility in Alabama to make Vehicles together. Toyota is going to use the Mazda inline 6 engine and the new rear wheel drive platform for their future Lexus vehicles and top-of-the-line Toyota sedans. I believe Toyota is also going to sell a rebranded Mazda crossover.
