Yeah, my empathy scores tended to be low...

“So...you decided to make poor choices and I am supposed to feel bad for ya? Don’t hold your breath...”

“It’s a train track! The train can’t go anywhere else! If you’re on that track, you knew what was coming!”

You could run over these five dipshits or the one useful guy doing his job?

Well, normally it’s five dipshits plus one less of a dipshit.

There’s another version of the problem where, in order to save the five people on the track, you have to push a guy in front of the trolley to stop it. Which makes little sense to me, because if one dude stops the trolley, then realistically maybe one or two would die and the other three would be terribly injured. Homicide versus a terrible accident.

run over the people on the track, then  stop the trolley when the moral outrage hits. best of both worlds.

If the one person falling onto the tracks could save the others then there’s clearly time for the others to move out of the way. This is simple physics

So who are the folks on the track? Are they useful to society? Or just ‘eaters’, eh? If they are NASA engineers I’d stop the train with my face.

Unless the company stands to lose more than $135  million, I’d stop the trolley. Figure 15 people, average wrongful death settlement of $9 million or so each...

Moral reasoning sounds like an oxymoron. Reason is devoid of feelings and morality would only apply to the possible logical outcomes of issues; whereas, morality is a means to justify or judge actions, beliefs, and ideals. True reasoning is an amoral process.

There are no answers, only justifications for positions. If all answers can be correct, no answer is correct.

Trains don’t stop quick. If you have time to stop the train before it hits the people you could probably just remove the people from the track. More information is needed for this scenario

I’m reminded of the possibly apocryphal job interview someone failed by refusing to press the button in a hypothetical scenario where someone on the other side of the world would die a few minutes sooner, and in exchange the person pressing the button would get a million dollars or some such.

The action of switching the deaths of many in an accident for the death of one by your own hand has too many variables to be a useful test, which has always irked me. It is presented as having a correct answer when a situation would purely be governed by impulse and reaction. I suppose it is based on the false presumption that a split second decision reveals our value of human life but that is simply not the case.

Failing such a class is the easiest act in life’s play.

I recall a science and ethics topic as part of my own course where most of my cohort failed simply because our explanation of our solutions to various ethical conundrums wasn’t always up to the convenors required standards.

And yet, 25 years later, twats on Twitter make our simplistic arguments on ethical decision making look like scholarly articles...
