Since the current occupant of the White House has been unwilling/unable to conduct a federal strategy to procure and distribute coronavirus tests or any other medical supplies, Republican governor of Maryland Larry Hogan got his Korean wife Yumi Hogan to help negotiate the purchase of 500,000 coronavirus tests from South Korea.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
On Saturday morning, a Korean Air 777 landed at BWI airport, carrying the tests worth a total of $9 million. In his press conference today announcing the testing coup, Larry Hogan, who is also president of the National Governors Association, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ,
“We’ve been doing everything in our power to acquire more tests from the federal government. Unfortunately, we have also had to compete with every state in America in our attempts to procure the tests from every domestic producer in the U.S. and from sources around the globe.”
He also previously !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with regard to President* Cheeto McFuckface’s repeated false claims that there are plentiful tests available to anyone,
“It’s not accurate to say there’s plenty of testing out there, and the governors should just get it done. That’s just not being straightforward.”
Thanks to Governor Hogan’s decisive action in getting his fluent Korean-speaking wife to run procurement calls with South Korea in the middle of the night for weeks on end, my home state of Maryland now (maybe?) leads the nation in testing capacity, and has enough COVID-19 tests to test roughly 8% of its total population.
Folks, this is not about politics. This is about elected officials at all levels of government, regardless of party, needing to do their damn jobs, listen to the experts, and take care of their constituents . Unfortunately , many of them at the highest levels are failing miserably at that. It just so happens that many of the ones in the fail column are from a certain party. I ’m happy to credit any elected official of any party who’s doing a good job. My hippie ass voted against Larry Hogan, and I’m thankful as fuck he’s my governor right now.

I mean, you could have voted for a competent Democrat, there are plenty of other times you don’t want Hogan to be your governor, though certainly he’s doing better than a lot of other governors right now, and definitely being more useful than that moron in the Oval Office.
Regardless, the whole idea that states should be competing against each other to secure these supplies instead of having single buyer purchasing by the Feds (ideally direct from the produces rather than through middlemen) is asinine. Though with Trump, perhaps we should be happy that it’s not being done that way since he’s definitely not above withholding critical life saving medical equipment from states that don’t shower him in adulation.

It’s interesting at this point to see which politicians are coming up to bat. I’m not a fan of Doug Ford (current premier of Ontario), but he’s apparently stepped it up. The premiers and the prime minister are apparently all working together on this. It’s a sign that maybe politics doesn’t have to be a constant shitshow.

Competition is “capitalism” = good. Working together is “socialism” = evil.

OTOH, the experts at Stanford believe the virus is 60-80 times more prevalent than generally recognized, so it’s likely about 90 days too late to administer a Test-Track-Isolate protocol.
Testing of this type would have been helpful in January. It’s unclear what you are going to do with the data at this point.
The first thing that SHOULD have been done was isolate the care centers and nursing homes, since that’s the only thing that was clear from Day One. I’m ashamed we weren’t on that as a country... YMMV

Unfortunately while higher prices will encourage people to increase production, there’s a limit on how much they can do that quickly, especially when companies aren’t going to be eager to invest for what is ( hopefully) a temporary blip in demand.

I did vote for Hogan’s democrat opponent. Hogan is broadly popular in Maryland even among democratic voters, and won. He’s not able to implement any GOP party planks anyway thanks to a democrat supermajority in the legislature. Maryland is willing to elect moderate republican governors because our bureaucracy is terribly overcomplicated, and the legislature isn’t going to be passing ALEC-ghostrwitten bullshit.

What we’re going to do with the testing at this point is test people with COVID-like symptoms to find out if they have COVID. That’s going to continue to be necessary until there’s a good treatment and/or vaccine. The fact that it’s out there and perhaps more widespread than known does not negate the need to test people who show symptoms.

If the feds got off their asses, guaranteed a minimum price and quantity to producers, and distributed it to the states, we wouldn’t be in this situation.

With the Dougster, it’s important to remember you don’t get voted best hash dealer in the 416 from 1987-1991 because you can’t organize a supply chain.
