Kinja'd!!!

So I unearthed a old Mopar block in my yard.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

After further excavating. I unearthed a casting number.

Kinja'd!!!

And a casting date.

2899830 4-14-72

Kinja'd!!!

The whole bottom end is packed with gravel and I mean packed. This was after prying the rocks out.

Kinja'd!!!

From the casting code I think I have a 383. Neat! But from what I can tell Chrysler never made a 383 in 72 or very few at least.

Kinja'd!!!

After some wire wheel time on the data pad by the distributor, I could see it was stamped there but can’t get enough off of it.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

HT 3

36 26

????

I checked the bore as best I could, and it’s well over 4 inches so that would make it a 400.

Problem is that the casting number doesn’t come up in any research I’ve done on 400s.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I’m kinda stumped now. Anybody know any Mopar block experts?

Kinja'd!!!

I wonder what else is buried back here. It’s been a good bottle mine too.

I am wondering if it was cast in '70 as a 383 B and assembled in '72 as a 400 B? I really have no clue, just guessing.

I’m no Mopar expert but ignorance has never stopped me from offering an opinion. It could be that it was installed in a ‘71 late in the production run or it could be a service replacement. I would guess the first one simply because I would think that April would be awfully early to be producing the ‘72s.

Makes sense. 72 was a change over year.

The service replacement idea is something I haven't thought of.

I’d put money on it being a 361 of all things . Is the bore 4.125"? T hey made industrial/HD 361s all the way to ‘ 78. I would have guessed if that’s the case.

383 would be 4.25" bore , 400 4.34". I can’t imagine it being a 383 because the c asting date would be well after 71 model year. Maybe a chance it’s warranty engine, but the odds of that are so small. I’m also not sure if a 383 warranty engines would be replaced by a 400 or not instead, honestly.

I thought the bore on a 383 was 4.03 ? It’s right around 4.2 to 4.3 so...

At least best I can tell with a ruler.

Damn digital calipers are dead but I haven't used em in years.

Well damn that’s what I get for drinking and doing research.

4.25 is correct for a 383.

The mystery deepens.

Ordering batteries for my calipers now.

Sounds like an 383 then. Gotta be a warranty block...maybe? I can’t think of anything else, as Ausgust-ish ‘71 should have been the changeover for ‘72 production.

RB 383 is 4.03" bore (3.75 stroke, same as rest of RBs - 413/426W and hemi/440) and was 59-60 only. The Bs - 350/361/383/400, have a 3.38 stroke.

You can try to get those numbers with a pencil rubbing.

One thing to remember Chrysler has always been perpetually broke, so nothing was wasted and anything is possible.

Thanks. I’ll give it a try.

Well my knowledge of Mopar blocks has expanded exponentially at least.

The OEM replacement theory is gaining ground. Got a few more leads to track down though.

Will do!

The better question is, what are you going to do with it?

Perhaps it was built for experimental/test purposes, and buried when they were done with it? Bear in mind I have no way of knowing if that’s true or not, I just think it could be a reason for the weird casting numbers.

It’s the date that throws it off for a 383 but the few Mopar people I know are leaning towards OEM replacement. Got some casting pics of 400 vs 383 and a pencil rubbing to do but its snowing and I’m lazy.

It looks like it was wrapped in plastic at one point though. Neighborhood rumor is that they used to run a chop shop around here and ditch the shells in the woods. So....

More o come on that.

I’d like to get the crank out but it’s doubtful.

I’ll bet you could. Use a pres sure washer to get the dirt out, soak the whole thing in oil, and use a big hammer.
