This is terrible news, really. Not only the economical impact is going to be immense(tens of millions of tourists lost), but the social impact will be too. Spain is a hugely social country, everything revolves around meeting people, going out and interacting.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And I’m not sure what I’m gonna do. My company could probably survive, but i f things go even worse, they will probably turn many of the work from home arrangements into temporary layoffs. I’m not a fan of the idea of coming back to the States, in one of the hardest hit cities.

Nevertheless, this only shows you how bad things really are. No matter how much we want for things to get better, it will still take some time.

Yes. Yes, they could. It’s a Your Money or Their Life Proposition! Do you want to play for a chance of a million euros and a career in reality television...or somebody’s body in a dumpster?

Yes...I know this sucks. Especially if you are under 30 and working casual in the service economy. But get used to the fact that until a) the old people are dead; b) there is herd immunity; c) there is a decent and cheap treatment; d) there is a vaccine or e) hell freezes over... the service economy as you knew it is dead for the foreseeable future. Shot in the face, John Wick style.

You can open up all you like...but I'm not sure the older people with the coin to spend (or their children) are coming back.

By “ some” , I believe you mean “almost all”. They’ll be lucky if 1 in 4 of the bars and restaurants ever reopen.

We're in the same boat in the US, the authorities are just announcing it in intervals of a few weeks instead of all at once, in order to soften the blow

I’m not really complaining about money. I’m still working 4 hours a day from home, so I get to enjoy some time for myself( a thing that was impossible when I had to surf between long hours in the office and meetings that seemed never ending( too bad I can’t really go outside much) not to mention that I’ve made quite a lot in the last few years, without spending much on big purchases and stuff(except weekend escapes around Spain and Italy), so I should be fine for some time . It’s just the uncertainty that bothers me , I know that, based on the contracts we have now (some of them with big businesses and state owned companies ), we can keep going, but with the tourism related work ceasing(and with  bad signs like the news above) , some of us may have to be let go.

Doesn’t Spain already have some of the highest unemployment numbers in Europe already? Does the country have a plan to cope with this?

It’s mostly young people(25yo and under) who make up a good chunk of Spain’s 13,7% unemployment rate as youth unemployment rate is around 30%. The Government constantly took measures to make working more attractive for the youth, but many consider it a self correcting problem. As for the Covid 19 crisis , various policies and stimulus packages were put in place, things like credit lines for businesses, suspended loan payments, suspended rent payments, increased public projects spending that create jobs, increased paychecks for essential health professionals and law enforcement and more. However, the most important thing right now is to stop the pandemic. Once people will be able to operate more freely, things will get better as restarting an economy needs a lof of workers.
