Even though I was fully expecting it, this feels really weird. I really miss my students. All the partially finished projects at school are figuratively killing me.

I was going to grace y'all with a cute kitty picture, but Kinja decided otherwise.

Are they going to finish the semester virtually?

Oof. Let’s hope not!

We just got word that two people in my company have tested positive and several have lost family members. We’re a national firm with over 5,000 employees, so it’s not a surprise.

Our school district gave up earlier today. I’m in my second week of teaching trumpet lessons over Skype. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing, and I’m enjoying seeing my students again.

Moving online? Or completely done?

A good friend of mine is a high school math teacher and they moved to online about two weeks ago after a few weeks completely off. They are done meeting in person for the remainder of the school year.

It’s been a bit rough so far as they are still trying to figure out what they are requiring for academic credit for the year and how they will achieve it . The school is basically 1-1 at this point, but that doesn’t guarantee internet access. He was telling me that his department is doing prerecorded and sourced lessons with a comprehension quiz at the end - everything available at the beginning of the week. I think he said he had ~15% participation the first week...

Even better, he picked up a long-term sub position for one period of physics at the request of the science department as he is also certified in physics - apparently it is easier to find a long-term sub for math than physics. The shutdown started right at the start of the 3rd marking period when he was to start this class , so he’s managing a class of people now that he’s never met in person.

I wish all of you luck!

We just completed week 3 of "remote learning," with 5 more to go now. Our terms rotated this past week, so I have 50 new 6th graders, and I've met like three of them in person previously.

My classes are "optional enrichment classes" for the reminder of the year, so participation has plummeted. I am connecting with those who are participating in new ways though, so it hasn't all been bad.

Being serious for a moment, our school took a couple of days after spring break to give teachers a crash course in online learning techniques. After breaking huddle, they told the students to download a bunch of apps like Seesaw and zoom to have class meetings and to distribute assignments. The kids were already using Renweb and MS online. According to what my wife, who edits the school newsletter, has found out, we are doing way more than most of the schools in the area. Apparently many of them gave up or had only token online curriculum. We are a tiny Catholic school with very limited resources , but I have to hand it to our new principal for mobilizing so well.  Our kids are actually going to learn something this semester, really a lot more than something.

And the ones who are reaching out to you are the ones who really want to be there. Separating the wheat from the chaff.

Yeah...there’s been no official word here either, but I have a feeling it’ll be the same. High Schools have been continuing with online classes in some places, but most schools have been sending work packets home, especially elementary schools...

It’s pretty much impossible to try and teach elementary-age kids online. I’ve never done it, but from teaching them in the classroom, I don’t think they’d just be capable of the maturity or the focus to do it...

We went to distance learning coming out of spring break. Before the Friday of the first week back, they made it official for the rest of the year.

You don't teach in Elgin by any chance do you? My work is currently renovating the wood and auto shops at one of the high schools here, just thought it would be a crazy coincidence but I know you're farther east. (Still working through all that vinyl too lol)

We have been told to back off and go easy on the kids and the parents, because a lot of them were overwhelmed by the amount of work being pushed out. Instead we’re stripping things down to the essentials. I’ve gotten good feedback about the things I’ve been doing. The guidelines I was given were to only take up 15-30 minutes of their day per subject.ost days I’m at the lower end of that. I really can’t teach any of my normal curriculum, so I’ve been doing a lot of videos on related things. Like how to change a bike tire inn ertube.

We have a first grader. It can be done, but it requires a parent sitting with them.

Nope, not Elgin. I’ll tell you where I work whenever we meet in person, which I’m sure will happen one of these days.

The ‘parent sitting with them’ part is the part I worry about, lol. Sadly, I think there are a lot of parents who would take the ‘screw that’ approach to not having to help their kid get a remote education :(

I’m a STEM teacher and have been teaching my kids on how to DIY their way through this   bullsht.

Yeah, but that’s what the Diocese chose to use, and it’s better than nothing. When we were little, communication with the school was all through the students as intermediaries unless it was in brief parent-teacher meetings.

There are also a lot of parents who are still working. Some are working more now than ever. That's a big part of why we're being told to back off on the kids and strip things to the bear essentials. Also why we can't really issue proper grades. Kids are in no way in equitable situations. Not that they ever were, but the differences are starker than ever now.

Yeah, for sure...a few of the large companies around here, and, of course, essential services, are still open. The Michelin factory in Bridgewater closed not long ago though...that was a HUGE blow as they are a major employer in these parts :(
