I mean, for $399 I get the single camera. I can even try to get the tiny battery(or not). But those HUGE bezels are so 2016. It’s ridiculous. For a company that claims to be ahead of the curve, this is just laughable.

I don’t mind the bezels or the price.

It’s the closest to a  Corolla of smartphones you can get. Perfectly fine for the vast majority of people. Maybe more like a Lexus ES or something.

I kept my SE for a long time. I like the fact that it’s not like holding a wet bar of soap. And it fits nicely in the pocket. And as for being ahead of the curve, this is a conscious decision to keep offering a solid, but less expensive phone. There are a lot of people who really don’t want a big phone.

This is correct. The bezels are big because they’re reusing the iPhone 8 casing, but with a lower-resolution screen.

THIS, so very much. I don’t want or need a phone that is essentially a tablet with an LTE connection. I want to be able to carry it in my pocket without doing myself permanent harm. I carry an iPhone 8 only because it’s a company phone,  Android isn’t an option there, and the 8 has the most reasonable form factor I can get without it costing my department $500 more than it ought to.

The entire purpose is to get customers into the ecosystem by offering a cheap phone made of mostly old parts that Apple either still has stock of or can still get really cheaply. The phone is essentially an iPhone 8 with the guts of an iPhone 11, just like the old SE was an iPhone 5S with the guts of a iPhone 6S.

I think it’s quite amazing and I’m a huge fan of where Apple is heading. Newest hardware in an old chassis is exactly what I’ve been wanting. It’s a $400 phone, temper your expectations a bit. The only other thing comparable is the S10E which is a full $200 more expensive. I also love that the new Macbooks went back to the far superior older keyboard design.

I bought four 8s last fall, three for my sons and one for me. The boys were still on SEs, and that phone remains viable, though a bump in processor speed would certainly help. For my kids, though, the SE was a major social status downer.

For $399, it’s arguably the best deal on a brand new phone.

Even though the battery is 1821 mAH, i bet it’ll la st a great deal of time thanks to that A13 bionic chip.

If you’re laughing at these specs, then you’re just ignorant of just how great the totality of it all is greater than the sum of its parts

Also, I’m not A n apple fanboi. I have a 8year macbook pro, but my other laptop, my phone, my wife’s phone and all other devices (tablets, earphones, etc) are not A pple

I absolutely despised my S7 Edge and dumped it after a year. Providing tech support to various family members with more modern Samsung phones including S9 , S10 and S20 series has shown they’ve at least managed to abolish the jank that plagued my S7E, but the software is still a mess in other ways. I'm a Pixel, OnePlus, and sorta kinda Motorola (if they could get their software update act together) kind of guy.

Pretty much. I almost responded to the SE post yesterday. I went from a 2013 Moto X to a used 6S in 2018 because my wife has an iPad and iPhone (used 6 to 11 at Xmas) , so we can FaceTime when we travel for work. She only got a new phone because she doesn’t carry a camera when we travel. I like the Pixel 3/3a and 4/4a camera/software but not sure I’d switch back just for that.

S mall form factor, decent battery, 128GB, and a good camera is all either of us need . The SE is interesting, but it’s not too far from the XR/XS used pricing so would be a tough choice for me. I also dislike the bezels but   paying $810 w/tax for her new phone made us feel like suckers  lol.

I don’t get the obsession with be zels. That seems fine to me. That said I also don’t get people who seem to not understand that replacing those bezels with screen makes the screen a lot bigger diagonally without changing the size of the phone. People are excited about this “small” phone, and so while yeah a 4.7" device sounds a whole lot smaller than the 6.1" iPhone 11, it’s actually only a half an inch shorter and a third of an inch narrower, which really isn’t much at all. Modern 6" phones are not the phablets of years past.

Nothing wrong with offering a mid-range product though.

Lol, not a lot of choice out there for a brand new smartphone under $400. I prefer the bezels over having a stupid hole punch camera in the middle of the screen.

I think you’re missing the big picture here. This is aimed at emerging and low income markets where A pple doesn’t do well, parents buying for teenagers , and corporate “fleet sales” . A tech “enthusiast” will buy a 12 Pro or whatever Samsung is making these days. Just as with cars, not every device needs to be the best.

Not only that for $399 you can buy a device that can be supported for 5- 7 years. No other cell phone maker does that.

I like it. I am still rocking a 4 year old 6s and it still works fine. Something like this would be a step up for me if I ever decide to get a new phone. I do not give a shit about specs. I do give a shit about a small frame that fits in my hands and pockets, a decent battery life, and my phone working with only minor glitches. This seems to fit that bill perfectly.

I personally dislike apple, but their phones work well. I've had palms, windows, Android, and now an iPhone. Each one was a flagship at the time. The last palm was my favorite. Now, idgaf. I just want something that works. I kept my last android at least 3 years and my current old ass iPhone is certainly more reliable than my old android. It's like a corolla of phones. Not the best, but it gets me to work every day

I agree it’s laughable. Last year I bought a Spanish market Galaxy A20. Think it was roughly $130 or something. Anyway, a year later I’m still using it.

I don’t need the horsepower of a flagship, I just want a big quality screen, little body, decent camera, and just enough power for everyday use. Boom, the A20 works just about perfect for that. It even has a dual camera.

And despite this phone not having any water resistance ratings, it’s been in a mud bowl, several storms, and at the bottom of a pond and still works. The glass screen protector on it has a million cracks, but the phone underneath is perfect. This phone survives torture like no other.

I had a first generation iPhone SE. I enjoyed how much power it had and the small form factor, but the front camera was comical...so bad I sold that phone immediately.

I love Apple’s flagship phones (and would get one if not for the freedoms afforded by Android) but when they try doing cheap it sucks compared to what you can get on Android for the same or less price.

What ticks me off are the IOS restrictions on what you can and can’t do. Back when I was allowed an Android, I had this great app that let me very quickly switch notification profiles. In the car, it was super- loud- ear-piercing because I tend to play the stereo too loud (and the El Camino is sporting glass packs). Hit the office, one quick change to vibrate-only or a quiet ringtone. Sit down in the living room to watch TV, or in a restaurant for dinner ? Someplace in-between. All that plus different colored flashing lights on the faceplate telling me that the message I missed was a text or an email or a voicemail. These days it will even do all those things based on GPS if you want it to.

With the iPhone? Oh goody, a toggle switch on the side that will switch it from whatever your audible settings were to vibrate, peppered with some overrides you set up in your contacts list. Why not get an app like you had on the Android, you ask? Because Apple won’t let you . The app would take system-level access that Cupertino won’t allow. The Nokia brick I had 20 years ago had better profile options.

And if you have the temerity to ask other Apple users about trying to find such an app, you typically get an incredulous look and they ask “W hy would you even need that? You have the silent switch on the side!” Why, because apparently my life and needs are more complex than yours.....

Ok, rant off. Sure, I could fix all that by just turning in my company phone and getting my own Android. But I figure if they require me to be accessible 24/7, they can pay for the phone!

For what it’s worth, I haven’t looked into my options for a while because I got frustrated with Apple. If there is something out there that would fill these needs   first-world problems, I’d love to know about it.

Well, that’s why they make so many flavors of ice cream.

I’ve been an Apple guy since my earliest days of computing, and it’s just what I’m used to so I stick with it. Are there things Apple does that piss me off? You betcha. Just not enough to jump ship. But I’m not going to sit here and preach about how Apple is better than everything else. It’s a phone etc, and I’m comfortable using it.
