Kinja'd!!!

Now that we’re in production of 3D printed masks, we need to source some more filament. To make things more complicated, our local hospital that we’re working with, for some reason, is being picky about the color of the masks. We were told we need to make them, “white or clear, or dark colors if absolutely necessary.” If we could use any color, I could keep my Makerbots cranking for almost a month, but white, clear, or dark, I have 8-10 days work on hand.

We’re using three or four 1kg rolls a day across the district with all of our printers and all the other teachers doing this, so we need to order now. Money isn’t an issue, as our district’s charitable foundation will be covering the tab, but sourcing it is a problem.

Amazon is the only place I’ve ever ordered it from, but they aren’t going to be shipping it out until the 25th, so I need another supplier.

So Oppo, help me out here, what 3D printer filament suppliers have you used?

I need white, clear, or “dark” 1.75mm PLA

UPDATE: Jminer’s suggestion of Micro Center found me 13 rolls of white and 3 rolls of black, at their location about 15 minutes away from me. So,  we’re good to go for a while.

I also got word that the other facility we’re printing for, a local senior center, does not care about color. So I’m going to start running one of my machines in white, and the other in various colors.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I have a ton of potential places I can source from in the future. I REALLY appreciate everybody’s help. Oppo is the best!

LOL! Solution is simple... we have red and green masks... if you dont like color, cover your face with palm of your hand

no? ok then. use red or green masks we’re offering.

Ultimately that is what it will come to if it has to, but it’s not my money, so I may as well try and find a supplier and get what they actually want.

Looks like I’ve ordered from Hatchbox (temporarily closed) and Matter Hackers before. Looks like the latter is still shipping. Walmart.com also has some but is quite spendy, I’m told.

This is tough - I usually order it from Microcenter but they’re moving slowly now . I ordered some early last week and it hasn’t shipped yet.

Although checking their website now they’re open again as an essential business. They have a couple locations in the Chicago area - you might be able to run in and grab a bunch of spools of filament.

I’ve also ordered from Monoprice for filament before but they’re sold out.

Give it a week or two and they’ll probably change their minds on the color options.

Materhackers? It looks Like Filaments.ca (great selection!) is operating at a reduced level... not sure how the shipping to the USA is doing.

I know Adafruit is operating as an essential business, but it looks like they are out of stock of almost everything...

I’ve used 3dSolutech’s filament a bunch, and though I’ve mostly ordered thier product from Amazon due to shipping, they appear to be doing special Covid-19 operations.

https://www.3dsolutech.com/form/fight-against-covid-19

as does Proto-pasta:

https://www.proto-pasta.com/

I’ve heard people like Coex’s filaments, and they are made and shipped from the USA, their website doesn’t seem to contain any Coronavirus specific info though...

https://coexllc.com/products/3d-filaments/

might be worth poking 3d-Fuel as well...

Crap! Even if it says “Ships today!” like this one?

Looks like walmart has some.

But yeah, not a lot available!

FYI Amazon is saying things wont ship for weeks, but I’be been getting them in 2/3 days, H atchbox filament included . Those items are still marked as “in transit” on my Amazon list. Pessimistic me says that they’re only making it look like they’re prioritizing essential items. I got spray paints before bandaids

Your experience may vary, but I bought a couple of spools from Amazon a week ago. When ordering it said delivery end of month, but it was 2 days. They shipped directly out of Kenosha (I’m in the very norther suburbs.)

Anyway, maybe give Lord Bezos a try, they may beat the estimates by a large margin.

Sigh. My wife is in health industry and they are struggling to find masks of any color. if you can’t move your Xmas color masks, let me know. I know many here without masks

I posted similar response earlier... but I might have seen a butterfly or something and got distracted. Either way I may or may not have posted similar reply twice.

Used to order 5kg spools directly from taulman or village plastics. I think we had the best luck with village plastics.

Red or yellow are avoided since it makes blood/dirt  harder to see. Its why everything is white/grey with things to attract attention are blue/green.

I ordered a new dog harness and it said it wouldn't ship until May, but arrived the next day. I think they might just be building in some space incase they have any unforseen staffing shortages.

And then put the hospital administration on blast when this is done. My sister was originally told she could not wear her own mask when not working directly with Covid patients. Hopefully people realize that one of the reasons hospitals are becoming overwhelmed is because many of them are run by people like Trump.

We’ll be printing no matter what color we’re using.  We’ll find somebody to give them to, if the local hospital doesn’t want them.

Printed solid, based in Delaware, is claiming same day shipping. I've had great service and support from them in the past. Their Jessie filament is made in house and comes in 5kg rolls.

Yeah I’d tell them you get what we can make, that’s insane, they must not be very busy. I read Facebook gave 100k masks to the Marin hospitals but I don’t think we have a major issue here.

Check SnoLabs. They have transparent PLA. It’s a vendor I use for myself, and prints well. And they are still shipping, and usually fairly quickly. PLA+ has cool gray, which may work as a white

If I may, how did you go about getting these approved through the hospital? I am a Senior Engineer at Toyota Motor Manufacturing (engine plant) in Alabama, and we tasked our small army of MarkForged printers with pumping these out (same design). We used medically-approved face cushion material, as well as official N95 filter replacement material, and we still ran into issues with hospital approval. We are also mass producing face shields currently, but we didn’t have any problem getting approval on those. Thanks!

Send a quick email if you have feedback!
