What does joining a team do. I've always wondered
![]() 04/11/2020 at 10:52 |

Where do you go to use this? do I need to download something?
![]() 04/11/2020 at 10:52 |

It allows us to aggregate our points earned.
![]() 04/11/2020 at 10:54 |

What do the points do? If we get enough can we send away for a frisbee?

If you are already folding, open the Advanced Control and click on the Configure tab. In the Configure dialog, enter the Team number. If you haven’t already, you’ll need to receive a passkey via email and paste it into that space. (This is very doable because I was able to do it.)
If you aren’t already folding, visit www.foldingathome.org and download the utility. Once installed, follow the steps above to join Team Oppo.

I think it’ll channel peoples’ CPU envy to a helpful cause. For example, my six-core Xeon CPU nets me 45-50,000 points per day at around 250 watts of electricity consumed. The FAH ap keeps all 12 threads busy and also uses the GPU on my video card. Gaming machines with Ryzen CPUs and late, great GPUs can earn 200,000 points per day with the same electricity output. I don’t know yet if the FAH website will list individual members’ progress.
I think if we get enough points we can all receive internet cookies.
Question for you: what’s a good light source for hackers and fakes that’s cheap for shooting YouTube videos? Right now, I’m using LED lightbulbs. I have to record lessons for my math classes.

Bragging rights vs. communal bragging rights

This team has over a trillion points. I think we’d have to do some catching up.

Sorry I saw that yesterday but didn't have time to respond. My advice would be a small cheap ring light for web cams or build your own soft box using high cri light bulbs
![]() 04/11/2020 at 11:13 |

I’ve been using 3,000K 90+ CRI LED. Does that sound right?
![]() 04/11/2020 at 11:15 |

Okay, I joined, but they had better be good cookies!

3000k a little warm but it should be in the range your camera can white balance without problem.
There should be a grundle of homemade softbox tutorials. The trick would be getting enough watts through. 100 watt softbox isn’t a ton of light.

It should list individual contributions once folks have folded for the team. It doesn’t look like previous points are applied to a team; only folding done after joining.

Softbox. I’ve seen those but not known what to call them.
LED bulbs go from 3000K to like 65 00K. I’ve seen 4000K bulbs, but not at Home Despot. I think my cheapo hacker stuff overcomp ensates for white balance, but then there are SO MANY variables between my face and the viewers’ eyeballs that what is truth? My webcam was a good one ten years ago...
Would you mind sending me a link so something that represents “cheap light ring” to you?

Meh. W utevs. Are you going to join?

I used to run this back in the day... I’ll get it started again. Just downloaded the client and joined the Oppo team!
Don’t have much in terms of processing power though - an i7 4770k and a GTX 760...

Joined and currently folding.

Stupid question: What is “ Folding” ? I’m seeing several Folding@home posts all of a sudden, and I’m thinking that unless Oppo has suddenly become obsessed with laundry or origami, I must be missing something.

Distributed computing / computational science. Medical researchers have these large scale modeling exercises that would require an enormous computer so what they do is chop it up into pieces and send out the pieces to folks’ computers at home. Why they call it folding I have no idea...
So you can donate some electricity and some unused CPU/GPU cycles and help these folks do research into Parkinson’s disease, COVID-19, and so on. Very legitimate.
Check out www.foldingathome.org
They give you a score based upon how many pieces your computer accomplishes.

I think I signed up. Guess I need to complete some work units before I show up on the group list.

Im folding now!
But it doesnt seem to detect my GPU :( Any idea how I could resolve that?

UPDATE: figured it out but I cannot fold, CPU is real toasty still...above 185 F

Make sure you have the latest version of the F@h client installed. It’ll pick up the GPU eventually.
If you shoot me an email, I’ll send you a sticker: oliphant.chuckerbutty@gmail.com

You can go into the configuration tab on the client and remove the CPU folding slot so that only the GPU folds. That’s what I’ve done and things are much cooler and quieter.

I fixed it, there was a fix posted on the forums
Idk if I want the sticker since im imimt folding now (cpu temp too high)
