Updated with w ord from the David himself:
You wanna make sure it’s not a seized camshaft. If it’s truly just a timing chain, then it can be done fairly easily.

I genuinely have no idea whether this is something I could fix, but I do (in normal times) have mechanics to fall back on. Given that I have no tools and no skills, is this something I’d have to give to an expert?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
It’s practically next door and for $850 I’m sorely tempted.

Guessing purely by the length of the description, it’s too much of a project.

I would be interested in why the timing chain broke.

DO TO CHAIN!
Uhh call a mechanic and see what a chain replacement ACTUALLY costs. But if you can pick it up and get it running under a grand it many worth it. But almost 300K. So offer $600.
I don’t really know. It seems like a hassle to buy something and put it in a shop.

I’m not an expert on Jeeps but if it’s a typical interference engine, you’re looking at a new engine. Or likely new valves, pistons, etc. So CP at $850.
If it’s not interference, then NBD.

I really should know, but I’m fairly confident it’s not an interference engine.

Considering how often my current Jeep is in a shop, that’s not a big deal....usually. Right now, obviously, isn’t usual.

I wouldn’t touch it because of the battery drain issue. My dad had a car with the same problem , and nobody could find the cause of the d rain.

Nobody as in expert diagnosticians, or nobody as in Carl down the street?
Either way, you’re right, that is a red flag.

The guy that looked at the car had been working on cars for 30 years.

Eep.

Pretty clean interior for something do cheap. Also, I see the body molding is warped -- hiding some rust probably?

At 300k miles and 30 years old I’m pretty sure there’s a fair bit o’ rust, but yeah, good eye.

Timing chain broke while running, is this an interference engine, if do you probably have bigger problems than replacing the chain. I have replaced timing chains, but on older cars, not one of these.
Total guess no research, you have to remove the radiator, drain coolant (I'd do the first one second and second first) and then access won't be so bad. Your valve timing will be off, there are usually markers or pointers in n the gears to be indicate where "right," is for valve timing, which is very important.

I confirmed it’s non-interference.
Thanks for the tips.
