He had part of a lung removed from lung cancer. Deck was stacked against him sadly.

I heard someone say “Everyone is a John Prine fan. They just might not know it yet.”

Pretty funny end paragraph from The Guardian’s obit:
“He had a small role in the 2001 Billy Bob Thornton-directed movie Daddy and Them, and years earlier had met with Dustin Hoffman after a producer suggested they work together on screen despite Prine never having acted before. “Finally, [Hoffman] said: ‘Well, how did you get here? And I said, ‘I don’t know. Maybe somebody boinked your secretary’. I never heard from him again,” Prine remembered in his 2015 biography .”

This. To my mind, the Tiny Desk Concert is his quintessential performance.

I’m a big fan of this one also.

I love John Prine’s music and this sucks, but the reason I love his music is my dad: an amateur singer-songwriter and talented guitarist a few years younger than Prine who has taken a ton of inspiration from the mailman who became one of the greatest songwriters of his generation . My dad is a tough, reserved guy and I’m not naturally the most empathetic person in the world but man it’s bothering me to think about how much this loss will hurt him.
