!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! my mother unfortunately wrecked their 2018 Honda Accord due to a medical emergency. Thankfully she was not injured and has been recovering well. Yesterday I finally got a chance to look at the damage in person.
For some reason the body shop my father chose is being very slow and hasn’t written an estimate for it. We’re thinking somewhere in the 8-10k range. My father thinks it will be totaled because of all the electronics upfront + airbags but I’m unsure. It very might well be fixable.
Anyways, here’s the rental car we chose. It’s a 2020 Camry SE with 600 miles on it. Obviously we had a lot of choices, including about 17 Nissan Altima’s (Yuck) and a few Ford Fusions. We figured trying the Accords main rival could be interesting. Tried to get a nice red Volvo S60 they had but they wouldn’t give it up for $30/day policy :(
The funniest part about this rental is not having Push Start. I think they’ve had a vehicle equipped with it for the last 8 years, so that takes some getting used to.
So we should have an answer on the fate of the Accord soon. If it’s totaled shopping will be weird, given our state currently can’t sell vehicles.
They really liked the Accord and all the features it had but are thinking about switching it up. Anything from a CPO A4, GLI, new Sonata, who knows.

going back to keys instead of a push start on a DD is terribly annoying.

When t he airbags were deployed in my WRX, I was told it’s standard policy to replace all of the sensors and all of the airbags. There’s a risk of the new airbags deploying when the battery is connected if just one of the old sensors was tripped but wasn’t replaced. At least that’s what the Subaru guys told me.

Doesn’t look like enough damage to bend any of the rails. Also doesn’t look like passenger bag went off. Suppose if it’s high mileage it could be written off, but I’m guessing not.

I can’t agree more. Some how between unlocking the door with the fob and getting in my wife’s 4Runner t he key has been put back in my pocket and I’m just poking at the dash.

Glad your mom is OK. That car is on the brink of total loss... airbags and modern headlight clusters are expensive but frame damage is even more so.

The LED headlights on that Accord alone are going to be INSANELY expensive...

I would much rather have keys! You can’t proximity-key-radio-signal-intercept-duplicate-hack steal a chipped
-key car!

If you say so.

Hold up, hold up. I test drove the V6 CSE camry and it had push to start granted highest trim. Are you telling me you keyless entry into the car, and THEN take the key out and start the car? Cause if so, that's WILD.
![]() 04/07/2020 at 18:29 |

At least the Altima has had keyless access and push button start for over a decade...

I’d say it’s a total or at least I’d want it to be
![]() 04/07/2020 at 18:37 |

Literally. I figured it would have it as it’s not the base model but nooope

Yeah the one rail might have a little bend but nothing crazy so I’m not sure. Only 20k miles so still has a good amount of value in it.

Thanks! It’s really hard to guess which way it will swing. It’s been a good car but I know my dad wants something with more power so he’d like it totaled haha

That’s very interesting. So they fixed your Subaru with air bag deployment?
![]() 04/07/2020 at 18:41 |

Definitely. Don’t know how much replacement of the radar sensors are but I can’t imagine they would be cheap.

I didn’t even realize you could get a Camry with a key. The Corolla is all push button now so I figured the Camry would be as well
![]() 04/07/2020 at 18:42 |
|
Yeah that’s what they’re hoping I think . If not at least it’s a lease they can get out of in two years.

Right! My second car was my grandmothers 2008 Altima and it had it, so kinda mind boggling this doesn’t. We just dislike CVTs and wanted something with a traditional transmission.

Oh wow didn’t know that about the Corolla! It’s so nice once you have it. I wonder if this is just a weird Rental spec that doesn’t include it.

I can’t tell the difference, honestly. I don’t know why people care so much about it, no offense, even for a temporary rental. My family likes them; they had a 2008 Rogue with one. Now, mom has a CR-V and my sister has another Rogue.
![]() 04/07/2020 at 19:07 |

Yeah I get it, for most people they don’t notice that much. My mom doesn’t really besides saying it’s smoother. I’m used to a manual which is why I don’t really prefer them but they’ve gotten a lot better over the years.

For a second I thought that key had wood grain trim on it

Here’s t he whole story:
https://oppositelock.kinja.com/wrecked-wrx-not-wrecked-anymore-1773586522
There was a lot of body work and some suspension work. The side-curtain airbags deployed, so they replaced all of the sensors and the airbags which deployed.

Omg can’t unsee that now!
![]() 04/07/2020 at 19:51 |

I was kinda of excited. Why not have matching trim on the key?
![]() 04/07/2020 at 19:53 |

My mom has had no transmission issues. If there’s any Honda transmission with issues, it seems to be their 9-speed more than their CVT.
![]() 04/07/2020 at 20:01 |

Actually, I stand corrected. Stripper model sedans can be had with a traditional key. No push button option on the L, LE and Automatic SEs are push start optional, hatch and all other trims are push button only. You buy a stick and you get a push button.

It doesn’t look too bad. Since the dash bag didn’t blow, and looks like the frame might still be straight, they may be able to save it.

Very interesting!

That’d be kind of nice, Lexus should do that

The new Camry is actually a really sharp looking car. Funny that it looks sportier than the Maxima (which hasn’t been a “4 door sports car” in a long time)
![]() 04/07/2020 at 22:39 |
|
That’s so true, the new Maxima doesn’t look bad per se but nothing really shouts sporty. I like the looks although might prefer the Accord, but this is really good for a Camry.

If they total it, mom, or you, could buy it back from the insurance company. Helped my mom do that with her beloved ‘98 Malibu (she was slammed in the side by a 350Z) . Might be a good daily for you, if you need one.
