1977 or 1978 , I believe, Ford LTD. Which I believe stood for Limited space left wherever you park. She would drive from Illinois to Missouri every Christmas, brought presents and homemade chocolate. Penny, our Cocker Spaniel, once ate a whole pan of white chocolate fudge that Grandma hid under the bed. She would sleep in my sister’s room, which put my sister on the couch. I got up when I was six to te ll her my wall made a funny noise. That was Grandma snoring.

I remember the car. A huge car . Three feet od solid iron ingot, measured from the front tire tread, made up the forward carrier launch deck. The top was green vinyl. The interior?

Equally gross was the interior. It was very much like this and very much a middle-management office as you could make an interior. It floated all the way to Dairy Queen and back with my sister and I rolling around the rear bench seat. In fact, I don’t remember much else about the interior, because any drive we took left zero emotional impact. Remarkable in that.

Q: “How’s it drive?”

A: “Like nothing before. Literally, nothing.”

Grandma was short. We became very nervous about her driving as time went by . She started bumping small things that weren’t cars or children, thank god, but it was only time before she did! So when she moved into an   apartment, dad changed out her car to something more usable and less likely to run over valuable things.

He found a mint Datsun 810 wagon. Red. Automatic. It drove real nice and had the 280z’s straight-6. I would love a manual version...and a skyline engine.

My grandparents on both sides were Plymouth folks. On my moms side had a bare bones Satellite sedan blue in and out with dog dish hubcaps. Looked like a cop car from a 1970s show. That was the only car I ever knew them to have. My dads folks had a gold Satellite Sebring with a white vinyl top and bucket seats. Always thought it was pretty badass. When they started bumping into things, it was a Plymouth Horizon. That was the last car they had. Btw, neither of my grandmothers could drive, but both could sure tell my grandfathers how to do it!

My grandfather was a diehard Chrysler man with his sedans. One time back in the 70s he bought an AMC, ended up hating it as it spent more time in the shop than on the road, and ditched it for another Chrysler.
