I just heard today the Governor of California is considering shutting down ALL construction, critical/ necessary or not critical and necessary. That will be a really blow to the balls.

Been there done that - s ucks like a sucky thing. You deserve a larg e drink when you get home.

Having been on both sides of it in my career, I think, in terms of the actual event, having to lay someone off is worse than being laid off (though the long term effects are potentially a lot worse for the layee, obviously). This assumes you’re an actual human with feelings, of course - plenty of managers don’t seem to give a shit.

We haven’t ha d the need so far this time round, but I had to lay off about half my team a decade ago when the company got in dee p financial shit (throu gh mismanage ment - unsurprisi ngly, the CEO and board weren’t among those who lost their jobs). W he n we got a new CEO 5 years or so back, I told him I wasn’t up for doing it again and if we ever got in that situation the first one out the door would be me. I may soon need to decide if I stand by that...

I would agree with that. I've been fired once in my life (technically laid off, but little practical difference), and have had to fire 4 people over the years (two of them were against my own preferences, but compelled by corporate policy). When I was fired, I honestly felt worse for my boss than for myself, she clearly did not enjoy what she was doing. And I felt close to throwing up the times I've had to do it.
