My 19 year old still wants the hot hatch. The 2014 Focus ST fell through- seller would not drop price. Looking at a ‘16 FoST Saturday listing for the same price the ‘14 seller stopped at ($14k, I offered $13,500). New contenders:
Seeing this 6 in 2 hours.
Seeing this 3 Friday.

That’s a great price on the 6. I love mine.

I like the Mazda 3, very reliable, very usable, very fun for what it is.

My nephew loves his, and the stick is fun. That’d be my vote.

What is with the panel gaps in these photos?

That 3 seems oddly inexpensive.

My sister has had her Mazda 3 since high school. She’ll be getting her doctorate this year and it is still going strong. I’ve mostly been the one maintaining it. Only CELs have been for usual emissions sensors that go bad over time and were easily fixed. She picked up a second one a few years ago to replace my BIL’s POS Pontiac and it’s been good too.

Apples and oranges to a FoST, but neither are bad!
If I was a teenager and had the opportunity between a Ford ST product or a Mazda sedan, I know which one I’d prefer....... That being said, I got about 8 speeding tickets before I was 20 soooooooo.....

Both those Mazda’s look like great values. I’d probably swing for the 6 as it’s just a better highway vehicle and more space.

Both of those Mazdas have 2.0 engines so they probably won’t meet the “hot”requirement, but both are great reliable and efficient cars.

I can't recommend the 6 enough. Have one with 70k miles that still drives great!

The 6 saved my life after a bad crash, walked away with minor injuries. I had a 2015 i touring, great car.

While they’re not as cool, either of these will be much better cars.

I would go for the 3 hatch, but both are great cars. Seems like you made a good decision to get him a slower car, since even if he is responsible, young guys (including me) gotta have the feeling of speed every once in a while. Windows down and letting a lazy 4 cylinder rev out on an on-ramp can usually stave off the need for speed for a bit. Of course I am also a sucker for a bright fun paint color and Mazda’s red is fantastic.

Wow that 3 seems suspiciously cheap. Losing two-thirds of its value in five years?
I think the 6 is a better car, but for hauling some larger equipment the hatch with the seats down would be more convenient...
