Since I don’t think I am going to get around to getting the Oldz LS swapped this summer, I am gonna pull the 4bbl 394 Starfire motor out and put a craigslist 4bbl 394 Starfire motor after a slight “going thru” back in. I’ve finally got my shop kinda setup and will be using this as justification of sorts. Onward and upward!

That factory iron intake must weigh a ton. Years ago I rebuilt a marine 427 top-oiler, and the intake and oil pan were cast iron. Ironic that a boat motor can double as a boat anchor.

Let’s just say I’ve had my share of arm workouts moving the manifolds and heads around the shop.

Ah, I see it’s even a “Mouse Motor”...   Cool.

Nice. A 63?

Was that 394 still connected to a Roto?  I’ve read that the 394 is a bitch to mate to anything else.

Sure is, good eye ! Yep, a slim jim roto. I got two of them now. Great.

It is indeed somewhat of a ordeal to swap the transmissions out. They have kits but also require some fabrication and expanding the tunnel to accommodate anything other than the “slim” variety .

I have been going back and forth for a while on what to do with it. But seeing how I have two rotos , I am just gonna send it until I have to make a move in order to move again . I bet I can make them last for a couple years while I put in a new kitchen with the $$$. Ho hum

Is that the “ultra high compression rocket”? I drove a 64 super 88 so equipped with no tach and a non-working speedo (front wheel style like my corvair) and it was a dog around town but given a open road that car accelerated harder the faster you went. That car was faster than we were brave, only ran on premium mohawk gas (high ethanol has an ti-knock properties) and it sounded good.

I once owned a 64 Dynamic 88 with the 2 barrel 394 and obligatory slim Jim. Loved the car, and I spend too much time shopping for 61-64 Starfire convertibles these days. Enough that I might be interested in an operating Roto if it was available later on.

Didn’t realize the tunnel was part of the problem - guess you’ll have to deal with that doing an LS swap. I know nothing else will bolt up directly to the back, unlike the Pontiac 389. Good to know whenever I pull the trigger on a buy.

I have seen a 98 (63 or 64 coupe) that had a 4 on the floor mated to a 394. Cool, but doesn’t really suit the character of the car.

Good luck!

Absolutely ! Before it lost compression it sounded mean with the dual exhaust and was really decent once you got past the 1-2 shift. It was faster than the drum brakes so I swapped them out for discs. It was a great decision and when I realized I had grown up and become responsible.

Yeah....I’ll have to figure that out eventually. I’m keeping the blinders on for now tho. Ha!

I don't blame you for that, and sticking with the Roto as long as you can!

this one was fresh and so was the weird “slim jim” trans.  It was rebuilt to have  about 10.25:1 compression instead of the north of 11 ratio it was born with, max compression feasable on mid 90's pump gas.  It wasn’t a project car, it was a family car for a family with style.
