Strangely enough, I have been to most of those towns on the U.S. side. From West to East, I’ve been to San Diego, Nogales, Douglas, El Paso, Presido, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Hidalgo and Brownsville. On the Mexican side, I’ve only been to Reynosa and Matamoros.

For a really long time I though “Kill the Moors” was a particularly harsh name for a town.

For some reason San Luis HS  was put into our conference for sports when I was in high school. Despite being a new school, those kids could ball. Gave us a run for our money when I travelled down there to play baseball (we were ranked 2nd in state and ended up going to the state semi finals). They won the state championship for soccer their second or third year as a school.

Where I live now, there’s a strong tradition of trading players - even in little league. Kids here are shuffled around to different after-school programs to develop their skills in their sport of choice and end up at different schools, public or private, based on back room deals. My daughter was doing well enough in soccer to make one of the state-level travel teams and was recruited to a regional travel team, but she decided she didn’t care for soccer that much. I’m thankful for that.

So, I wonder if they were actively recruiting kids to the area in anticipation of the school opening.

That was just starting to happen when I was in hs, but their school was too isolated, and the families too poor for it to be a thing there . They were all immigrant kids from Mexico.

We had one kid who’s dad kept shopping him around. Funny thing is the only one of us to make it to the big leagues had a super chill dad that was fine with him playing ball at the local high school. He just got another couple million dollar deal and had the best season of his career last year. His dad coached our Fall and Winter club team (local club, no trave ling), and just encouraged us to relax and have fun. Felt like The Sandlot.

I did the math with a college kid who kept failing my class. A person has a better chance of completing a Ph.D. than going pro in any sport.

The general attitude putting sports ahead of academics is a recipe for failure. I read about a kid who was a local star and focused on soccer to the detriment of his schoolwork. He broke his leg his junior year and never played soccer at the same level again. With terrible grades, he didn’t have much of a future (in his eyes) after that.

Yeah, my teammate planned on being a pharmacist, and wasn’t really planning on making it big. He said if he did it’d be a bonus. He was always much better than the rest of us, but was never a jerk and always had fun. It really does feel like the Sandlot watching him play.
