Well now you pretty much HAVE to buy a car...

While true, this also probably interferes with my side plan to drive a Golf R.

That is. . .
. . .just terrible. The rep doesn’t seem too fussed about it over text at least, but that can’t have been easy to go through.

Part of me wonders if it’s the cutthroat world of sales, part of me wonders if it’s just putting on a show to comfort a customer that they’re keeping it clean and positive. I’m a first responder, don’t tell me how bad it is, I already know.

2 managers and one sales rep- this ratio seems off
![]() 03/27/2020 at 19:36 |

Yet unsurprising.
/Works for an agency with too much promotion

I don’t call immediately bringing up mass firings positive. Your statement is really all too true; lots of car sales will not survive this.

Well, one is the sales manager and one is the executive sales manager
![]() 03/27/2020 at 19:48 |

I just left a place where more than half of lower management were vice presidents. See, we don't need to give you as big of a raise this year, because we promoted you!

Well, if they only had one manager left and the salesperson was off for the day , who would the manager leave to go talk to when the customer made a counter-offer?
![]() 03/27/2020 at 19:48 |

Exactly what I expect from years in the corporate world.

who knows, he might go along with the Golf R joyriding plan- it’s not his car, YOLO, etc.

You might be his only customer. Drive every car on the lot.

This explanation makes the most sense

So one is the owner’s kid, and the other is the manager that knows how to run the business

Wouldnt be unheard of

Dayumm. Even if that’s true, I would never convey it that way to a customer .

Bingo.

I heard today that some of the dealers are having the mechanics do the service advisor work.

And not a single tear was shed...

I’m surprised they don’t have all the salesman there. Must be a place where they pay them more than commission

Because of my somewhat spicy car takes, I’ve been trying to keep my “jobs” quiet, but I’ll go ahead and say that the jobs I’ve mentioned in my most recent posts are dealer sales jobs ( to get my foot in the door of the automotive industry).
This post made me log out, but then I remembered I live in a bustling area and the dealers I talked to are high-volume and have survived through a lot, so I’m still hopeful.

Fingers crossed for you.

I mean if we don’t come out of this with a better dealership experience we should just stop bashing them for what they are.

They were very hopeful, too. I wouldn’t be able to start working for another month, and that’s when they’re predicting a “surge:” people who were scared about leaving home to do something like car shop will leave again. At least there’s the promise of stimulus checks and widespread testing, and people have been isolating for a while now.
A couple places I talked to had a more “now” focused outlook; the current scenario wasn’t conducive to hiring.

You seem like you would also do well if it came to an “internet sales person” position. You type better than many people I’ve dealt with, and I imagine are knowledgeable about what you’d be selling .
In response to your logging out, I tried to get into my career very young and during a hiring freeze for a lot of agencies. Keep at it and you’ll get where you want to go.

They offered to ship the car to me and pick up my old one, which I was impressed by. But I want to test drive it first.

Thank you for the assuring words. I really appreciate that. As to logging out, I meant getting out of here. Seeing people post about being in quarantine and the exponential growth of cases made me more worried, so I was like “nope.” Once stocks started doing better (and people seemed to calm down some), I’ve come back.
This dealer was extremely promising and saw the potential in me. I’m young, about to be a fresh college grad, and I have knowledge and appreciation for all cars. Along with product knowledge, I have great people skills and retail experience. I don’t think I’d want to do car sales my whole life, but if the boat floats well and I end up doing $80,000/year or something after a year, the jump to corporate life may not be in my best interest.
Jobs I was thinking about jumping to included corporate jobs (ex. management trainee, vehicle acquisition) for rental car companies. They fell in line with what I want to do someday
.
Now those are companies I’m glad I’m not trying to get jobs with right now haha.

I was thinking today that this crisis could be an impetus to change the dealer model for selling cars. If you have a more online based one where someone delivers a car to you for a test and you order your car from afar, you could make more sales in this period than your competitors. This is a time of opportunity for the business that figures out how to adapt.

If you get low-balled on trade-in again shoot me a number,
I can probably better it.
