Douglas C-124A Globemaster II (Bill Larkins)
I’ve been watching a fair amount of PlutoTV lately, and the movie Strategic Air Command (1955) has been on a lot. The film stars Jimmy Stewart as an Air Force Reserve bomber pilot who walks away from his postwar baseball career to go back on active duty flying the B-36 our of Carswell AFB in Texas before transitioning to the B-47 flying from McDill in Florida. It’s not a great film, at least the story is kind of hokey, and it’s really just a propaganda film about how our nuclear Air Force is actually preventing war with the Russkies. However, the aerial footage is stunning, and the scenes of the early Cold War iron are great: Peacemakers, Stratojets, Globemaster IIs, C-97s, KC-97s, etc. It’s a time capsule of 1950s SAC aviation, complete with a cigar-chomping knock off of Curtis LeMay.

It’s not a double-bubble, but it’s an obround double-decker. I’ll take it.

I’ve tried to watch that movie at least once, but fell asleep fairly early on, not exactly a ringing endorsement. I’ll have to try again.

What makes me smirk about that movie are the scenes where the pilots’ faces are covered by O2 masks and they have to move their heads around to make up for we can’t see their mouths. Super corny.
I really like Twelve O’clock High .
But my favorite big iron movie is the Buffs in Dr. Strangelove . They treat the bomber crews, even Slim Pickens, with reverence. That is a brilliant film.

The best thing would be to have it streaming or on DVD so you can FF through the silly story parts and just watch the airplane footage.

Or else it helps us know who is talking.

Yes! Another horrible movie with great aerial photography. Another is Jet Pilot starring John Wayne.

PlutoTV having 24-hr channels for MST3K and RiffTrax makes me a very happy man. The only bummer is the amount of replays that I see. With a catalog as massive as MST3K’s, I shouldn’t be re-watching movies for weeks, if not months.
But I guess it has something to do with licensing only a portion of the collection at a time. Oh well, at least I always have American Gladiators to fall back on...

We bought a smart TV for Christmas, and I’ve been watching more Pluto than Dish. Almost enough to make me ditch Dish, but the whole pause and go backwards on live TV is too much to give up.

I’m right on the verge of finally getting my partner to cut out DirecTV. She’s such a TV junkie, that it’s been tough going so far. But I think I might have her hooked on the Hulu Live TV deal.
Even with every single add-on feature they have, it will still cut our bill in half, while only losing 2 or 3 channels that we ever watch (and a whole hell of a lot we never watch).
