As of tomorrow midnight, Dallas County is enacting shelter-in-place. All the scheduling gymnastics I’ve been doing trying to work our giving an exam are out the window. We are all online with no clinics or labs to the end of the semester. This will play havoc with the DDS and DH licensing plans. Right about now our dean is probably wondering if early retirement is a good idea.
I’ll be work from home except for stuff with the mouse colony. My daughter is already stir crazy, and I think my wife finally gets seppuku. She’d never do it, but she gets it.
Nevertheless, Spring is upon us. She hit the snooze button a couple more times than expected, but she’s waking up. Today’s pic of our front bulb patch for your time.

Shelter in place is fun*!
* for about 48 hours.
We’ve been doing it for 8 days now (first week was by choice). Hopefully you get some decent weather. It snowed here today.

I am somewhat shocked we aren’t in lockdown here in King County, home of the original hot zone where a few dozen died.

I was texting my cousin last night (she’s in Seattle) and it sounds like you effectively are, but the governor is too weak to declare it.

this sucks. I’ve been WFH since last Thursday, and until this afternoon haven’t really left the house since Wednesday evening. I’m not extremely worried about getting it. I’m uneasy, mind; I’m not that old and don’t have a lot of risk factors but still there’s a non-zero chance I could have complications. What I don’t want to do is unwittingly expose my parents to it. my dad is in a high risk age group and pretty much ticks all of the boxes for “underlying conditions” (T1D, COPD, hypertension, and past heart surgery.)
![]() 03/22/2020 at 22:25 |

Yeah, my wife and I can't believe they haven't done that.

My sister was suppose to be taking practicals for her NP licensing this semester. They said they’ll do it online (somehow). She’s also a practicing nurse in a cardiology unit that is telling her she can’t wear a mask unless she’s working directly with patients, yet no one is being kept in negative pressure rooms, so the virus is probably everywhere. And her check engine light just turned on. She’s driven my ‘66 GMC no problem so I think she can handle the Tundra.

8 days?! Ha!!! I’ve been doing it for 53 days and counting!
At least I know it wasn’t my former employer’s fault.

Ugh. I dread the thought but I expect we’ll get to 53 days and then some. Take care!

I’m staying with my mother for a variety of reasons, and it’s really nice to share the burden of this lockdown with her and make sure she takes it seriously, but I definitely worry I’m going to expose her.
She’s philosophical about it, but it’s easy to be so in the abstract, much harder if/when you’re faced with the actuality.
![]() 03/22/2020 at 22:35 |

I think we just have to accept almost all of us are going to be exposed to it at some point.
Funny enough, my uncle missed a wedding early in February because he said he had the flu, and later said it was the absolute worst he’d ever experience.
I’m not much for conspiracy theories, but I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to believe this thing was circulating around the world well before China finally raised the red flag.
![]() 03/22/2020 at 22:38 |

It’s weird, our governor is kind of a reactionary cautious type, so many are expecting it. I think maybe he’s trying not to set off the wingnuts, who are surprisingly plentiful in WA, and not just in rural areas.
But with so much tech/office work from here, huge amounts of people are WFH and are mostly thoughtful enough to take precautions, so maybe his advisers think things are fine - although I did many out at parks etc this weekend.
![]() 03/22/2020 at 22:38 |

I suspect it might change within a few days, at least for immediate Seattle metro.

It’s not a conspiracy. Viruses do this shit all the time. I haven’t called out of work in ten years and was down this winter after traveling all Fall. My sister’s hospital was getting patients with flu symptoms and negative flu tests all winter. I wouldn’t be surprised if this has been circulating for a while and we just now noticed it isn’t the flu.
We had a very bad flu season a few years ago and no one batted an eye at the structural failings of our healthcare system because flu is something we deal with all the time. Now we’ve got something new and it’s putting strain on those same exact systems. Hopefully we’ll get the message this time, but I doubt it. Thankfully this one is just a wake up call from mother nature and not a knock out punch.

Thurston county is already f'd. No free vents and mask shortages.

At least your governor hasn’ t posted a list of crimes the police will and won’t go out for. (arkansas...ahem!)
Lock down is fair. You can still go outside your own house, sit outside, enjoy a drink. mow a lawn. Get gas while out for groceries, etc. I’m socially distancing from the social media. Only paying attnetion to the solid sources, ie: cdc, and real data. And when I look for it, I do it like may parents did and my grandparents did. morning news and evening news. There is honestly no reason to pay attention to any news release in between because its only half done and i cant do anything about it anyway in that time.
Enjoy a quiet get away where you are. but check yelp for reviews on your own home for your staycation.

Shelter in place here was just to get people’s attention and shutter nonessential businesses.
They’re encouraging people to get fresh air but maintain distance.

Oh to be back in DFW. If Tarrant, Collin, and Denton (and Rockwall I guess) don’t follow suit it won’t be as effective.
Houston is going to blow up because they refuse to think ahead. Expecting the worst down here. I have to run to the office for a couple things, then will close the hatch for as long as possible.
Keeping sane is going to rough on everyone everywhere. Good luck!

We supposedly have one case in my county now. My neighbors think they have it, they were skiing in Vail, Co, the week before (big outbreak there). Active couple in their sixties that still run, ski, etc. They say they both feel like crap, all symptoms but breathing problems. No test, no medical care, asked them how bad it would have to be before they could get tested or treated, they said they really didn’t want to find out.
Wo efully unprepared is an understatement, the basic message from the medical community seems to be stay home if you think you are infected.

They’re gonna have to as the epidemiological evidence stacks up.

My Dad says his patients have been canceling appointments, which is appropriate, as all of them are high risk and would be coming in from afar. I said it would be good for him to stay in too. He said that’s mostly just for old people. To understand the joke, you have to know that he’s 83.
And yes, he’s been WFH since too.

We are all struggling with how to do online testing, but the real challenge is that these are clinical degrees that require a certain number of clinical hours to certify the competencies before they can even qualify for the licensing exam. It’s a nightmare.

Definitely. Odd to me that WA leads the country in deaths (I think), yet is not one taking the strongest action - and this isn’t a regressive “buuuuut muh rights” state .

Our county has by far most of the cases in TX. They still won’t test you except to confirm or if you need medical treatment.

But isn’t concrete a priority service?! I mean, for a garage?
![]() 03/23/2020 at 01:03 |

Rockwall hadn’t had any cases last time I checked, but that’s probably changed. I heard Abbot won’t lock down the entire state because most of TX isn’t that bad yet. I don’t know why Dallas should be so far ahead of Houston in cases.

I’m teaching a unit on biomimicry and systems design while we’re on quarantine, hoping that this next generation will get the clue that adaptation and managing change are our keys to success. (I realize I have zero chance of teaching anything to kids at home staring at a screen all day, but I like fishing).
I’d rather take the kids out on a hike and explain all the desert plants to them.

Huh. I also had the worst freaking cold? who knows? of my life that knocked out most of my February. Holy crap, it sucked. It just wouldn’t go away, either. I coughed so much that my doctor said my throat looked like raw meat. The only thing is, the cough started off as a wet one, so I’m fairly certain it was something different. Anyway, whatever was going around in February sucked big ol’ floppy donkey balls.
I was hoping to make up the lost income with a few feature pitches this month, but........FML.

It seems to me that construction is one business that can operate with social distance. Lots of space lots of air easy to stay separated while you're working.

![]() 03/23/2020 at 08:08 |

That possibility has been floated by several reputable sources. supposedly, there is a test that can determine whether you've had it in the past. One of these days that Tesla come online and what you are wondering about will be shown to be either the case or not. But I tend to suspect that you are correct in your supposition.

Oh, don't be too quick to downplay your chances. When I think about my own classroom during normal times, out of 25 or 30 kids, I have somewhere between 5:00 and 10:00 who are seriously motivated and interested in being successful. I suspect that those same kids will tune in to whatever we are offering and we can be successful with them.

I went to Walmart yesterday morning. It's five or six miles from here, mostly freeway, and the freeway was deserted. I've never seen such a thing. 7:00 on a Saturday morning. The temptation was to see if I could get my Mazda 3 up to 100 mph, which I haven't done yet. I've only had it up to about 90.

Hardware stores and home centers are still allowed to be open here, but I don’t want to go there unless we genuinely need something. I too stocked up o n a few things that were needed for some projects.
Schools here are closed at least through April 7th. Hopefully if they extend that, then the district will let us into the building. I have things I can do there for E-learning that I simply can’t do at home.
Also, my kitchen cabinet doors are still all there.

You might be able to make a case to them to let you in. In my district, the custodians have supposedly disinfected everything, and if we re-enter, they have to do their work all over again. actually, I think Home Depot is a pretty safe place to go because there's lots of space and it's easy to keep your distance from people.
![]() 03/23/2020 at 09:08 |

Same deal in my district, so we’ll see. If we’re actually back in school on April 8th, it’s no problem.
We went for a drive yesterday. Didn't go anywhere, just had to get out of the house. The parking lot of Menards (Midwestern chain similar to Home Dumpo) was surprisingly full.

I don’t really know how locked down is locked down. They can’t be arresting people off the streets for being out. Basic stuff is still open. I’m not quite sure how to do this. But today is my last chance to get to work before. And my VPN isn’t working and IT can’t figure out why. So I’ll not get campus networks as easy. It’s all an adventure.

Mostly in the city proper.
Go 10-20 miles out, and it can be very red statey. It’s pretty amusing, as a huge amount of that faction are employed either by the public/praetorian sector, by protected public sector-adjacent employers (such as heavily unionized Boeing), or in the trades/construction cabal building tacky houses and faceless office buildings for the supposed progressives. I see a deafening amount of cognitive dissonance there, the base preaching hard work and “accountability” often has a union/taxpayer funded meal ticket/heavily coddled economic segment/ daddy’s connections helping them.
