Subaru owners (and their mechanics), what is this part by my alternator, and why is it covered in oil. My understanding is that the oil should stay inside the engine.
Thanks!

Oil pressure switch. Probably should get that replaced.

Oil pressure sensor or switch or sending unit or whatever. I’d wanna swap that out. Looks like it should be pretty straightforward. The right pal would do that for you for a sixpack of good beer.

The real question is, why isn’t the alternator covered in oil too?

Or, David Tracy could come do it over three days, a broken engine mount and re-tapping the hole for the sender to a English size to accommodate a sender from a 1967 Jeep he has in the backyard.

I'd be ok with that.
